Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Remote being converted

I heard recently that a remote person who is less than 30 miles away from the office is being converted back into hybrid and forced to go in. This employee is out at the moment so I can't ask them. Anybody else hear anything to this effect

Optum is letting go all the buildings, as the leases expire, in Oregon. If they can us back, we'd have no office to go to.

Lots of people were converted to WFH after Covid. Many live within 5 miles of office and have teams that are in office.

Bring back the pizza parties and the occasional taco Tuesday and I’m down!

@d4 incorrrect. It’s more that GL31 and up and that “for now” was put in place in July. Additional locations are being added and tc will be converted to hybrid. Your for now was partially accurate in July.

Define “office” lol.
The closest “office” is a doctor office that is optum. I have no united buildings anywhere in any neighboring city. Not everyone lives in a city or even nearby one.

The obsession with RTO these days is wild. First off, UHG had WFH for decades before Covid. Second, all the teams are distributed now (mostly offshore which is sad). If I went into the office today, no one there would be on my team or my business customers. I’d drive in traffic 40 minutes just to sit at a desk and take teams calls all day. There is no synergy. They messed that up when they heavily offshored and reorg’d us to death.

@a4 NJ is back to office in the middle of October. This was confirmed by the VP, office manager of the building. The NJ office is not being closed, it’s just being downsized to one floor.

Also it’s 30 min commute, not 30 miles

It’s only for grade levels 31 and up in MN and DC for now

If they do that, go them. I will be quitting to work elsewhere and they can find someone willing to drive in and sit on Teams calls with their boss and coworkers who live in Texas and California.

i'm in optum in MN and returned to office. not sure why they want us in. it's me and 12 h-1bs on my floor and none of us belong to the same team. we're all just doing our teams mtgs with our own offshore and business teams all day. maybe they needed mn and dc to return to office to validate the cost for all the extra security they have in place? it's really locked down. i have a hard time believing they'll roll this out to other states.

There is no hybrid anymore. You're either in the office 4 days a week, or you're fully remote. I don't consider 4 days in office "hybrid", it's effectively full in-office.

@a4 I would confirm with that person instead of worrying about this. Personally, this is too soon to say, and exactly how rumors start here. News like this travels fast as it affects people. Likely, the one you know heard it from a colleague or someone in the other 2 locations (MN/DC). They only said NJ email about office closing, not about RTO for telecommute. If this covers larger spectrum, people might have been talked a lot about it now.

Does this apply to everyone? Just those who are hybrid? Or also those who are telecommute?

@a2 This person is in NJ and the NJ office just got an email that one of the floors is closing so there's even less space.

The office footprints are vastly diminished for many locations. If the space is leased, doesn’t make sense. I only see this happening if the space is owned vs leased.

Yes, for MN and DC.
