Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Everything bad that comes with RTO shouldn’t surprise you

It’s by design. More control, less communication, insane workloads, unrealistic expectations, and requirements few can actually meet. And it will escalate. Because RTO isn’t here to make Ford a leading company. It’s not here to retain talent, boost efficiency, or foster collaboration toward some grand vision. It’s here to make you quit, so they can get rid of you on the cheap.

@n7 what are you yammering about? Wrong thread? To address your random misdirected comment… the lot of you are dog water. Hot shark doo doo doo babies with power. Role-players. Then there are the outliers. Some outliers have self respect, others are naive, feel are made vulnerable intentionally to land lock you into ford like Laos unethically. Contractors, PS, Salaried. Doesn’t matter.

@mh Clearly not a Ford employee then as none of them would ever crack a manual or a book. It must be purchased service or a contractor.

DF and JF have to justify the company's poor performance. As leaders, they cannot blame strategy. So they have to blame execution. But layoffs w severance are expensive. So they are trying to reduce the cost by encouraging folks that have options to leave on their own. Does that mean potentially losing good folks? They don't care. In their mind, FNV4 wouldn't have been cancelled if folks were "good".

So folks will voluntarily leave as the company tries to make things as uncomfortable as possible.

For those that don't leave, it's unlikely Ford will give a reason when laying someone off (at least in the US).

If someone is nowhere close to meeting the RTO badge swipes and they are disposable, then HR's job is easy. Ford can just terminate for cause and justify it w the attendance policy. No severance given and they're relatively safe from a lawsuit. These folks are the low-hanging fruit.

If someone is on the threshold (just barely making attendance--maybe due to vacation or health) but are disposable, then they'll likely be laid off. No reason will be given (if you're in a right-to-work state) and you'll get severance contingent on signing a "will not sue" agreement.

If someone is not meeting attendance numbers but is considered "necessary", they might be safe for the initial rounds of layoffs but could be identified as someone that needs to be replaced in the future. Or they might get slapped on the wrist with a poor performance review (or possibly lowered bonus).

It's likely that DF's buddies might be on the "allowed" to WFH list. But DF and JF don't have much time left and if they go, all their buddies will too as new mgmt will likely "pivot". But that will likely be too late for the folks just doing their jobs following a flawed strategy.

The Ford leadership collectively has such poor self esteem that they resort to power and domination games and hierarchy.
The “knowledge over hierarchy” in the Mulally era really chapped the LLs arses.

The clowns that rolled this out will FAFO when they lose their young talent to competition and experienced senior talent to early retirements. Threatening termination never motivated anyone.

@e5+1k23gjyjr Understand the sentiment but for reals you will get written up for that.

When we were forced into open office space a guy whose family owned an appliance store brought in a truck bed of appliance boxes and we created our own cube walls with doors around our tiny space. We all got an invite to a meeting with HR, LL6, LL5 and LL4. It was blah blah blah, fire code violation, blah, blah, blah, insubordination, blah, blah, blah, take it down if it happens again there will be disciplinary actions up to dismissal. Later that week Hacketts media team was in videoing claiming everyone LOVED the new open office environment. Then we understood why the full court press.

If you're going to micromanage people go all in. Bring back time clocks. If you are unable to make it in, don't contact your supervisor, tag your LL1 Doug.

I too got the HR email about not meeting RTO requires and facing potential termination...when in fact, I have been meeting the requirement. Some of this stuff you just want to shop around to an attorney as it feels ripe for a lawsuit.

@ck Hackett viewed employees as objects, same is true for JF.

Lest we think only the current leaders are inept, there was a time when cube wall height indicated what salary band you were. Lower wall height = lower salary band; higher wall height = higher salary band. That got expensive to maintain and frankly looked like cr-p with the various cube heights in an aisle. So cubes walls in an area were made the same height. Some buildings got all the short walls other the tall walls. A number of old school people who ended up in short walled cubes were furious as it was below their station. It was telling that Ford leaders had done this whole cube wall height thing, I mean who thinks like that? Definitely not someone who is out to have a productive and happy workplace.

Now what do no cube walls mean? In the days of old those were the interns, temps and clerical staff. Now you know how JF values you, and how Hackett valued you.

100%! But don't stop short. Let's roll everything about work back to 1925 or prior! No computers, no climate control, maybe some basic indoor plumbing. And of course, limited or no personal vehicles!

The only pathway to future success is found by desperately clinging to the past.

this hoteling concept is the fault of that steelcase guy... hackett. "design thinking," what a joke. how about "design"-ing an office with enough space for everybody to have a proper desk with some cube walls for a tiny bit less loud environment. "think" about that, ford land.

Poorly planned RTO, what should happen is for 1 or 2 buildings at a time to be populated for 2 weeks, let that settle in and then move on to other buildings and groups.
My guess is that the current sorry plan was developed by people who don’t have to play musical chairs at the office.
These people are just plain stupid.

How is Ford Land going to explain why an entire building full of engineers are out sick or in the hospital or worse? because of the next COVID? How many lawyers? What happened to masks? What happened to the 6 foot rule? Ive been to too many funerals in the last 5 years.

What happens when critical skills employees who actually care start to leave? There are many arrogant loud mouths who know nothing and do nothing, but very few who are actually technical experts who deliver 2x-3x the workload compared to the posers?

100% agreed, all by design. Farley's true "SMART" Objective is to make as many lives miserable to quit or get fired.
