Thread regarding Charles Schwab Corp. layoffs

sabbatical program sunset

New hires after January 1, 2026 will not be eligible. There are on going discussions about what to do about people who have accrued time for a sabbatical beyond this year. They originally were going to let everyone employed on or before the end of the year accrue their remaining time but that would mean keeping the program alive for another 5 years. There's been talk of letting you take your next one if it's less than 2 years away but a certain c-suite person who used to be with McKinsey only wants to let those who already got a sabbatical approved take it and everybody else loses their accrued time.

@h2 brother you are aware there aren’t that many Desert Storm veterans that work in the company right? Especially one with a warning on record. Hmm, I wonder who you could be!

As someone who came from the tech industry, I thought the “sabbatical” was so comical. It’s only a month?!? I had unlimited PTO at all of the 4 tech companies I worked for and no one blinked an eye if someone took a 3-4 vacation. The 5 year sabbatical at Google is 16 weeks fully paid, and I had plenty of coworkers at Google and other places who negotiated longer leaves at the ten year mark.

@hd

They can update their comp package anytime. A good company would give something for something taken away, for example they could say we will now accrue more hours per month or per paycheck but it probably won’t be as good as what is taken away.

@h2 Boy, Schwamp could trim the fat and get rid of you two people leaders. You'd be better off working for the bloated Cheeto in Chief anyway.

@hd Right. Lol. Clearly you didn’t read your employment contract. Oh wait, you don’t have one.

Sabbaticals are part of the benefit package and they use it to recruit people. They'd be sued into bankruptcy if they took it away from the current employees who can say it was the deciding factor when they chose schwab over another company.

@em Sabbaticals are bad enough but I had a guy on my team tell me he was taking "paternity leave". I laughed because I thought he was joking. Then my MD told me it was a real thing that I had to allow and I got a verbal warning for being "insenstive". I didn't risk my life to go fight in Desert Storm so some Sally could take 6 weeks off from work to recover from watching his wife give birth.

As a PL I don't approve sabbaticals and I won't. It is a 100% discretionary program subject to the needs of your manager and Schwab and I see absolutely no justification for any team to be down a person for 28 days. If your team can accomodate that then you're overstaffed. Originally the program was intended for employees to spend the month doing volunteer work in their community or engaging in personal development. But it's been abused for years and almost everyone uses it as an extension of their already excessive vacation time.

@cm Schwab is a lot of talk. They been telling me for that last year I gotta come back to the office. I keep telling my manager "Sure thing, whatever you say boss" then don't show up. I haven't stepped foot in the office since March of 2020 and I have no intentions of returning. In fact, I moved to Boulder almost 3 years ago. No way I'm driving all the way to Lone Tree. So, when they tell me I can't take my sabbatical I'll just say "Sure, whatever you say" and just won't come to work for a month. They won't nothing about it except welcome me back. Over Teams of course.

The only reason Charles Schwab has sabbaticals is because they don't provide standard vacation. Been here 22 years and don't get any more vacation than I did at 9. They stash the extra week which would total 5 weeks over 5 years and give you 4 weeks. If you leave you don't get it if had they provided an extra week of vacation every year it wouldn't be a problem in the first place. I'm not surprised anymore It used to be a few work 4 hours in one day you wouldn't have to claim sick. Now it's 6 hours. Seems all they want to do is take away benefits.

@bw Very few would quit. It's a lot of talk, but when push comes to shove meaning no more paycheck, people will grumble and just stay. Seen it time and again at companies I've worked at. Common, loved benefit goes away, people scream they'll quit, then the business continues forward with 97% of the previous employees because they're all talk.

Sabbaticals are nice, but I'm astonished it was ever offered in the first place.

Do you know how many people would quit if they got rid of sabbaticals? It's the only thing Schwab has going for it. Even the EC wouldn't be that stupid.

Wouldn’t be surprised. Walt wanted to get rid of them and can’t imagine Worst not seeing cost savings. Pre covid talk was extra accrual but net loss per employee pto.
