Smaller, more skilled Everett workforce

https://www.bizjournals.com/seattle/news/2020/11/10/future-of-boeings-everett-factory-is-up-in-air.html

“The role of the Everett location will change, driven towards more production engineering, higher skill levels and with the goal of designing, testing and implementing the Boeing factory of the future,” Merluzeau said, saying he sees this role “as integral to Boeing’s future” though it will be one “with a greatly reduced footprint.”

It’s about time Boeing started caring about our health! Smaller employees! Time to get rid of that Boeing belly!

The purpose of a union is not to protect a skillset. It is to give workers fair treatment and a voice without retaliation.

Your comment “highly skilled people have skills therefore they have choices” is somewhat irrelevant in the non union world when you want to keep your job but there is retaliation. When a highly skilled non union worker retaliates, the worker usually leaves because they know they don't have support when treated unfairly.

There are many non- union workers let into the workplace because of management decision. Many of these workers are then promoted quickly due to who they know regardless of their skillset. You can’t do that in a union.

Also, there are different type of unions (craft unions, technical unions, general unions) There would not be a society of professionals, engineering employees association if your comment were correct because many would have left the union since they are “highly skilled people” as you phrased it.

Retaliation in the workplace is real but being in a union helps shield workers from retaliation. Workers don't have to leave where they want to be anymore due to unfair treatment, they can push back on retaliation/unfair treatment when they are in a union.

I remember back in 1997.
The best mechanic was the team lead, he knew everyone’s job.
The manager of the area was the old team lead, so he also knew our jobs.
You goof around on your bar line and it gets noticed right away.
When Mc Donalds Douglas took over Boeing
the merger burger, everything changed.
They came up with a generic manager that did not even know what a hi-loc is. They made a big error by doing that, thus began the downfall of leadership. They just want someone who goes along with whatever they say.

More Skilled Workforce = Non-Union.

I say that because highly skilled people don't need unions because they have skills and therefore they have choices.

Non skilled people need unions because they depend on senority rather than skills to keep their job.
