Can anyone share their experience changing groups internally?
Did you use the Internal Marketplace? If you do apply for internal jobs, does your current manager get notified?
Trying to figure out how internal moves work.

No - your manager does not get notified immediately when you apply for a job.
Depending on your situation, it wouldn’t hurt to tell them as a courtesy, so they don’t find out later down the line after your future hiring manager/HR reaches out to them. Unless you want to blindside them/don’t care if they get blindsided. That may not be in your best interest though just professionally.
@f5 they aren’t supposed to but I’ve seen them have a “talk” with the other manager and magically the position needs a different skill set and that person is out of luck.
@nx HR telling the truth? .... how old are you?
This can be asked directly to HR. Should be straightforward answer but depends if HR tells you the truth
@f5 ...but they specifically need to sign off on transfers from their team at TI.
When I transferred my old managed blocked my transfer. Didn’t sign my transfer papers. New manager was pi---d
I applied by word of mouth and internal recommendation.
At another company a long time ago, the director kept blocking my transfer (due to my high productivity), and the new team was desperate to get me due to a ramp. It was like a 1.5 month delay and i also had to move from where i lived. When the director went on vacation and my then boss had signature power, he signed for me. He had recommended me to the new team. Great boss.
@ct managers aren't supposed to be able to block transfers. I know of one who gave zero day notice of his transfer. Didn't go over well but it happened.
I don't know if your manager gets notified immediately, but they do need to approve the move to a new team. I know a lot of people who have quit recently because their managers wouldn't approve a move and they hated the team they were on. Turns out cutting comp AND keeping people on teams they're unhappy with is a quick way to reduce headcount.
While I haven’t moved jobs using the Opportunity Marketplace, my understanding from multiple people (and me applying to many jobs and my boss never saying anything) is that your manager doesn’t get notified until later in the process. Not sure if that’s when new job’s HR talks to current job’s HR or you accept the offer.
