Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

The old ways just won’t die

I still don’t understand why leadership keeps pushing for an RTO. Cutting back on office space would save money, and remote work has real benefits for the environment. If I’m hitting my goals, why does it matter where I’m sitting? The old ways just won’t die. It feels more about control than productivity at this point.

I remember working in the cubicle farm. Noisy non-work chatter in the hallways, people dropping by other people's cubicles to chat about nonsense, people wearing noise-cancelling headphones to filter out the noise.

All the in-office work being done was on the computer, on-line, and remote. While sitting in your cubicle.

RTO is based on a belief that people are reluctant to let go of.

@gw I wouldn't sweat the RTO, the team organization that you have described is ripe for being cut.

I suspect the old ways will eventually die, even if it's kicking and screaming. Technology for virtual presence will continue to improve, and younger tech-savvy people will replace the old people who insist on old ways. Plus inflation and increasing wealth disparity will make living close to work unaffordable for most of us.

@gw good for you ya gotta job. No one says it needs to fulfilling things Intel. Just virtually su-k di-k. RTO means can’t watch po-n at work I guess

You don't understand because you have not read the research. Remote workers have lower output and destroy ability to create learning environment for junior people. The evidence is overwhelming and for this reason most all CEOs are requiring RTO.

I don't believe the RTO Troll lives in so many minds, rent free.

@ax spot on. And as was said earlier it’s a filter. People who won’t/can’t do the commute quit. No severance.

And yes… people are getting exceptions and still working remote. Just not you.

I just wish there were exceptions to RTO. My team is scattered around different sites so it's entirely pointless for me to go in. I'm just sitting by people I don't even work with, doing the exact same stuff I do at home. All it has done is make me think less of Intel.

If you need a grab and go burrito and banana in order to activate your brain cells to start working, then that's called being hypnotized. I can literally send my work to Intel wirelessly through the air with solar power and not have to set one foot on Intel property.

@dc go inspect your process and observe the calibration steps from home.

@d2 This is obviously mostly the effort of one person, pleying to themselves, but point taken.

Now if he could weave in RTO and H1B that would maximize the psychotic state he clearly is in.

God I literally love RTO posts, you get both sides of the insanity in full effect

The fact of the matter is the majority of adults, if you can call them that, need authoritative presence to fulfill minimum responsibilities. Additionally, in a fast paced manufacturing environment it is much more beneficial to have all heads available on-site for impromptu meetings when necessary. Lastly, the new blood coming in his not culturally aligned and not learning how to perform their job functions.

Used to be technology just wasn't good enough to make WFH viable. Those were the old days - managers still live in the past. Until they change, you can either spend 2-3 hours on the road every day, or pay twice as much for a house & yard that's half the size. So glad I'm retired.

Just come on in and practice your quiet quitting.

You and everyone else at Intel are an unavoidable one-way journey. Your job will be eliminated, the only variable is time. So with your remaining time on someone else’s dime, quiet quit, serve yourself, look for new work, he’ll take new work while you collect an Intel check if you can swing it!!

The truth has been shoved violently down your throat. Intel hates you. Jesus hates Intel. Whether you choke on it or swallow hard and start digesting is up to you.

Intel would rather have you dead than pay out a severance for laying you off. Think about that.

It’s a filter. Some people may quit if they are live too far away.

Su-ks to be you if you are in the position that you only do 2 hours of moving excel and composing powerpoints everyday. Somehow you have to appear to be busy for 8 hours.... Commute is the same as it was in 2019 and since the invention of the automobile and moving to suburbs id--t.

We all know working from home is BS ! Get back to proper work. Work from home contributed massively to the demise of the company, and the cost of all the home setup tables ,chairs, ergo this ergo that , complete BS.

Get over it, the RTO discussion is over. A decision has been made and communicated. Whether it is right, wrong, or indifferent it doesn't matter. Your employer, who gets to define the work you do and how you do it, has mandated RTO. Live with it. As others have stated this is the least of your concerns. If you need to move close to a site in order to comply with RTO you might want to consider all of your options. No sense spending money only to get let go.

If not RTO, how can I perceive everyone's smelly breath and armpits? How can I chat for long hours about house and car prices and taxes and kids schools? How can I hear the sound of nail clipping three cubicles down? How can I let my manager know that I'm a good good boi so they give me treats? How? The company needs this energy!!
