Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Baby Boomers

All baby boomers, how do you feel about GM and everything that's going on currently? I understand how my fellow millennials feel. I also know that after a little time here we jump off to better opportunities and seem to find these easily. Let's try and keep it civil here.

I was laid-off from GM in the 2009 restructuring. Over 50, spent most of my career with a supplier, so had little seniority. I was told (privately) that HR consultants and attorneys make the "selections". Too many lawsuits from protected classes of employees. Anyway, got a nice offer to work for a Defense Department branch in D.C. Was NOT easy, but sold the house, packed the family, and moved to Maryland. Smartest decision I ever made. There is a damned good life waiting for you after GM. Don't be afraid to embrace it.

I started working in 1981, over the years the economy went through several recessions, each time the national corporations that I worked for would either close satellite offices outside of the home state or went out of business all together. GM is the company that I have been at the longest. These things are cyclical and not a stranger to me. When they happen, I do the only thing I can. Dust myself off and move on. I have no ill feeling at all. I have been there and done that before.

I’m a boomer, as far as I can tell, the “Corporate Bond,” per se, where u are essentially taken care of, evaporated about 30 years ago. Therefore I’m amazed at the number of people surprised by the ruthless nature of this downsizing. Maybe it’s evidence of how insular the GM and auto cultures are. Either way, a “corporation” has no soul, and no care for individuals, in spite of the artificial shine applied by their PR machines.

If you read , I believe the Gen X person with 15+ likes has a pretty clear mind on the cuts , doesn't read single minded to me.

This whole direction of looking at what is going on at GM by generations just seems ridiculously ignorant. i know people at GM from all three of talked about generations and have to say that everyone's type of reaction seems to be more aligned to the kind of person they are than which generational group they fall in. I know some "millennials" that are reacting to it they way people on here think the "baby boomers" are handling it and vice versa and the "Gen X-ers" right there next to them with no single hive minded reaction to these cuts.

Everyone has a different set of circumstances in life , some people may have to work longer because of many factors one could be personal set backs like today's layoffs , an expensive divorce, family emergencies that could cripple people financialy or overspending when a young worker. Life happens. Some older folks may enjoy the money and people and refuse to retire , I know lots of folks in the late 60s to early 70s age group , who knows what their story is and it's none of our business. As for Young folks , stay humble and hungry be kind , keep mentally fit and your body strong, be creative and create wonderful things , keep your nose to the grindstone and never waste your time and energy living in fear , follow these and everything eles will follow. I am Gen X born in the late 70s and have had the pleasure of working with the best and worst people both young and old. So many wonderful souls at GM just as there are many toxic and evil souls , one thing I know is that everything eventually comes out in the wash , right now folks are getting a crystal clear view of what we have sitting at the top of the ren-cen , ignore it. Do good anyway and work hard for yourself and family.
