The company considered the employee "family", but continued to Underpay him for 4 years!

Employers expect loyalty from employees, but doNOT and NEVER give loyalty back. Employers consider loyalty a one-way street.

Your coworkers are also Not your friends.

Coworkers will Lie to each other and throw each other under the bus to protect their jobs or jobs they may want in the future.

The sad fact in life is Everyone, your coworkers, relatives, neighbors and friends are your Competition.

No one in their right mind will help someone else get a promotion, make more money, buy a bigger or better house, car, etc..

People only pretend to help with the goal of getting something out of other people.

Everyone uses everyone. Else you wouldn't have anything to do with them at all. You wouldn't talk to them or give them the time of day.

Thank you for your post.

Fortunately or unfortunately, I learned very early in my career to view and treat my relationship with Employers as a business transaction or business relationship.

We're Not and Never family or friends. We're co-workers. You cannot fire or lay off your relatives. You can choose Not to ever speak to them, but @ the end of the day you're still related to them, including in-laws unless you get a divorce.

I eschew team/department lunches and dinners since their purpose is to present a false sense of togetherness, friendship or job stability. I don't attend these events. If they're held in the office, I grab my food, make very brief small talk if at all, and then eat my food @my desk.

According to well-known career coach Ryan Yockey's 12 Brutal Career Truths: Companies are loyal to profits Not people.

This is soooo correct. No matter if you're the best employees in the companies' history, the companies will fire or lay you off due to budget cuts and/or favoritism/politics.

Employees must have a detached and non-loyal view of their relationship with Employers. They can divorce you at anytime for any reason.

Liz Ryan who's a career writer for Forbes Magazine and other publications, stated that any employer who claims that everyone is family at the company has a Dysfunctional and delusional corporate culture and executive management.

Case in Point: Campbell's Food Company's recent scandal and lawsuit against it by a former employee whistleblower. Everyone can Google the details.

One of Campbell's mottos is "We're a family." LOL!

I have 13 in with C and I’m begging to be given the voluntary layoff pink slip. I’ve gone ahead and put my name in the hat in hopes that I’m chosen but nada. I’ve not heard a single word on it. All the while I’m watching others get their walking papers.

So tired of this company.

I’ve had two rounds; first was in February 2020 (officially April) after 16 years, and it took me about 6 weeks to “mourn” the loss, as I had made it part of my identity (big mistake).
Round two was this Feb, last day April 21st, after 3 years. This time around I knew what I was getting into, and for me it was a transaction, plain and simple, and simply did my job as best as possible, but no ‘above and beyond’ or giving extra, simply a transaction. It was a win-win for both sides, and since my expectations were low, I’ve enjoyed this RIF.
Sorry you are going through this, you will miss the people you work with, or at least is my case.

@eh so relatable! I'm not trying deliberately but something inside me is irritated, tired of it , I can't explain what is it ..could be seeing someone less deserving getting or stealing credit, my new manager not valuing me, nonsense work..I am just thinking it as a bad marriage and living as worried next one may be more bad or same

29 years - volunteered early in '25 for the first salvo - living and loving life. Until it's not there anymore you never realize just how much stress, pressure and contempt there was after the huge culture shift post-pandemic.

I miss the people that came up together - I even miss the work (it was fulfilling meaningful work). Do not miss the post-covid shift and subsequent Citi culture brought about because of it.

Same here, 11 years, felt this chance I wont get again. Job was ok but I really liked and wanted that half year salary. I know they layoff periodically, but I myself stopped my extra effort to get it.

13 years..but it was me who actually initiated it. Started doing the bare minimum intentionally from last 6 months, there was reason, management changed, new manager started preferring her community people. I wanted a promotion, was clearly told don't even think of it. I felt this was the best time to get the money out instead of changing the job as they're laying off in bulk.

15 years, RIF'd in February. I added value, lots of it over my tenure. Awards, great reviews, promotions etc. The last 5 years were the most miserable in my 30+ years of working in banks. I am so glad to be gone from Citi. Placed has turned into the worst of the worst. Daily stress fest. But like many of you I struggled a bit at first. I mean it's your life for so long. It became part of your identity. It can be like a death in a way. A loss you need to mourn. Totally normal. 12 weeks is usually about the time for your psychological and physiological systems to reset and open to accept something new. Don't judge your feelings, just have them. It will pass. Unless you're hanging on and can't let go. Then maybe therapy. But give yourself a break and take your time. All the feelings and confusion about them is totally normal.

Noticed things thing about Citi - everyone is counting the years of service as some sort of a badge of honour 😄. It is the added value that matters, not how many years you have slept on your desk / had kitchen chats. Such a sh-t show of a company...

I know it’s been about a month, but after dedicating 14 years to one company, it makes complete sense that you’re still having a hard time coming to terms with it. That’s a huge part of your life, your routine, and your identity, so anyone in your position would feel shaken and disappointed. Being laid off does not erase your experience, your work ethic, or everything you contributed over those years.

Unfortunately, nowadays a lot of companies make decisions based on shareholders, numbers, and restructuring, not on loyalty or the value of long-term employees. That’s the harsh reality of the corporate world today. It says far more about how companies operate now than it does about your worth or dedication. The skills, knowledge, and relationships you built over 14 years are still yours, and no layoff can take that away.
