IBM no longer needs any Research sites, as our strategy is increasigly to simply acquire other companies.
Research site in Albany gonna end up much the same way. It won’t flat-out shut its doors — IBM will always have a boot on the ground there — but don’t fool yourself - it’s gonna be cut way down to a fraction of folks keepin’ one lone specific project alive

@cp I'm sorry but you're not quite correct about having nothing to show prospective IBM clients. Alvind simply has to fly them at IBM's expense to any village within a 1 kn radius of the IBM Offices in Bengaluru and show them what a sh*tshow actually looks like. It's an eyeopener for them.
With its current mission, there is no need to keep any Research labs open, other than PR to say - "look we do Research!"
Research used to do amazing things until Ginny changed its purpose to be more near-term, and gutted the patent incentives. As a result of this, years later, IBM has nothing much now, and nothing in the long-term pipeline .. just research for the next quarter, which is basically development, so now Research as a separate unit is redundant.
The best researchers left for greener pastures during those long-ago times, and now other companies (Google, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, etc.) are reaping the rewards of true long-term Research started by former-IBMers way back then.
The job of Research at IBM is to generate press releases that juice the stock price at the lowest possible cost to produce. Nothing more.
@OP another wonderful sleight of hand trick from Alvind and the Pipmunks. Jobs from Brazil will disappear and magically appear in India (as usual). It's all about costs, not the quality of research. Of course all the bunk and about Quantum in India is exactly that - qbits of nothing is still nothing. Nothing extraordinary will happen to Research in India except the parroting and vomiting of the same information in different journals, white papers etc. IBM Research is nothing but a darn joke and should be shut down. The useless VP of Research hasn't got the ba--s to do anything except collect his oversized paycheck. You get more value for your meals at Mcdonalds than research at IBM Research - but both are grossly overpriced.
research at IBM is some kind of gimmick, these days. Talking about Quantum nonsense.
