Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

I just turned down another job offer because the salary was a joke

Companies keep acting like hiring is some kind of charity case instead of an investment, and it shows. Not to mention, I keep wasting my time because every employer treats pay like a state secret. If salaries were even a little transparent, I wouldn’t waste time interviewing for roles that lowball by 40K and more. At this point, I’m convinced they’re all just hoping someone gets desperate enough to say yes.

The ebb and flow of who has the advantage keeps on going. At this point, it's the companies that have the advantage. Will it swing back to employees? If AI in any form is a bust, yes, it will. Even without the AI hype, I.T. companies are really cutting back.

Agentic AI is what companies are hoping for. If successful, employees will be toast. That is a big IF though.

"Dell pays poorly."

Yes. I treat this post with suspicion.
Why would you interview without discussing salary expectations? This is doubly true for companies.

That’s ironic. Dell pays poorly.

The Wall Street Journal recently had an article about people right now are shocked at the serious offers they are getting from companies, not just the pikers trying to low-ball an applicant.

Things have changed since the quiet quit days of Covid. At least more and more states are enacting laws that companies have to list the salary range for advertised jobs

never said risk free. But you need to lower your risk by working for a better/stable company since your family/mortgage is on the line. The fact this concept goes over your head is telling.

Paychecks are never guaranteed.

end of story. layoffs are happening everywhere. stop acting like there is some magical place where people exist risk-free.

Paychecks are never guaranteed.

Think of it like cars. Dell is the chrysler. Apple is the Toyota. I would work to put my family in a Toyota.

Stop with the woe is me. You have obligations and responsibilities and you wagered it on a dell paycheck.

'Unfortunately, with the current state of the industry, uncertainty of the market'

stop lamenting on why you are still at dell. Opportunities were there you just didn't act on it
market ebbs and flows.
its currently at employers market.
2021 and 2022 were employees market.

Unfortunately, with the current state of the industry, uncertainty of the market, there is a glut of people looking for jobs. Limited leverage. And I posted this previously, and people don't like to hear this, but at least historically, Dell payed pretty well. If you have experience in software development and/or AI, you can find great jobs with great pay. But legacy hardware-based skills and experience are not valued.

'And this is why many of us have not left.'

You mention all this obligations and responsibilities yet you allowed your entire fate to hinge on a dell pay check?

the market ebbs and flow. If you are carrying the responsibility of kids, mortgage, etc you should have de-risked a long time ago by leaving dell.

Let us guess, you're under 30 and think that they should be paying you $200k or more...

And this is why many of us have not left. Yes, it makes sense to leave if you're not happy. But if you can't find a comparable job (and it's tough in this market) then actively deciding to leave is difficult. It's not just a matter of updating your resume and applying for things, like so many on this site seem to think. It can take a year or more to find a job now. Staying makes more sense for many, especially if you're older. Even if you're miserable, the bills still need to get paid. Older people have more complications in life, like kids in college and mortgages, and can't afford to take massive pay cuts just to be happier.

Some european countries have salary mandatory in the job offers. Should be everywhere. It is like going to store with no price tags..
