Thread regarding Target Corp. layoffs

Figure it out!

So I know you guys/gals at TTS are really concerned about devoops, agile, how many coffees your boss has, your pay grades and when your next promotion is, but.... For the love of god pull your heads out of your ... and do your jobs. Website down on cyber Monday. Get it together.

2vlc you are right. The .com TTS teams need to have significant change. I don't care if they are agile or not...they have not done a good job. They likely hate agile as much as 2fgg is butt hurt about whoever RC is and DevOps. Agile isn't about delivering faster...it is about doing less of the wrong things and understanding what you don't know faster. The people angry about agile like to live in a world where they have a false sense of certainty that comes with a waterfall world.

RC has done this before. Remember? Bladelogic was going to solve world hunger! But then he made security engineering the plaform owner and it died in the vine. So RC has the experience and will be Director in IT soon enough. God save us all

2vlc - AMEN! 2gah is probably just another devoopser traveling the nation speaking at all the DevOps conferences about ho successful TTS DevOps is. Their next presentation will be on how they saved Christmas for sure

2gah - If Agile is the savior for everything and its so fast, then why hasn't .COM been replaced already? I will tell you why, because Agile in purpose is a great idea, however what the pied pipers don't understand is that Agile when preformed properly can actually increase time to delivery if properly executed. Now if your in the RC camp, you are a believer that Agile will shorten delivery times and allow for fewer developers. I think Agile could be successful at Target, but they need to rip and replace the people who have been there for 5+ years and live off their reputation instead of actual output. They need real people who actually have done this before and not just taken a few workshops and a Scrum test.

Impreesive that the agile haters come out in force to blame it for a website that has sucked since it was built in the best outsourced waterfall method (Everest) that TTS is famous for.

Target's response is to cite how busy they were on Cyber Monday--try to tell investors about traffic versus actual revenue and see how that goes.

They need to layoff those TTS folks they kept hanging around post 9/1/15... hmmm obviously they let some very good folks go and kept folks that talked the talk but obviously cannot walk the walk. Cyber Monday was proof positive that Target is spiraling down, soon there will be nothing but the gurgling sound of everything going down the drain.

@EIqMdOq-1krv such a cop out. all target tts talks about is .com and mobile as the only way to stay relevant in retail! Amazon will have done in online retail this year what target does in brick and mortar and online and mobile this year. the fact that you punt responsibility for the dotcom failures means you are part of the dotcom problem. I have been watching dotcom and mobile app since 920 AM CST this morning and it is still broken. dotcom matters and Target is doomed without it. so take it seriously! Isn't that what RC preaches? Its ok to fail? I would love to see him tell this to BC, JJ, MM, and JG face! it was not ok to fail on cyber Monday to this magnitude! All the ammunition Leadership needs to layoff more TTS jokers is in hand. at lest he will still have sweet basils!

Maybe Target should figure out to sell merchandise the other 11 months of the year and not put all its eggs on one event. What have you been doing for those 27 years btw, waiting for .com to save you?

7:34 pm CST Been sitting here for nearly an hour watching my battery drain and the Loading message go around and around on my iPad Target app. Tried the phone app, just got error messages over and over again when I tried to add to the shopping cart. Bravo Target. So glad I left there and don't have to be so embarrassed listening to friends and family. Now I just smile and tell them I shop at Amazon.

All, we are 18-24 months from being a less lousy technology organization. Plenty of time for our customers to find someplace else to shop. Relax.

Online shopping cart still down! 7pm est. Targrt TTS lost the whole day! Not just any day but the single most important day to online sales and will be a major hit in revenue! Look for BC and the rest of the leadership team to put a spin on this and shift the blame away from their strategy! MM may be in office less time than the last CIO!

Has an external caching network like Akamai or Cloudflare been ruled out? I know that TGT used Akamai a few years back to harden their presentation layer against traffic, and mobile was part of that.

Sometimes there are deliberate attacks on these cloud caching providers and the telltale sign of this is other websites go down as well. Didn't Paypal suffer an outage too today?

@EIqMdOq: look, 27 years now with TGT. The first 16 I spent every day after thanksgiving and Christmas Eve in a red store in 8 different states, celebrating with red a khaki, eating under the fluorescent lights of commerce. What WE are talking about is a MAJOR aspect of TGT's business today. The "season" accounts for a third of our business. It's really hard to conduct the business we are in when the buying public can't access our product or loses confidence in us to get it to them. The time for accepting excuses is over.

Agile came from deep within development culture as a means to simplify much of what's wrong with software development. THE PROBLEM is that it only works for specific types of work at a moderate scale. To just Agile the f--- out of everything at the enterprise level looks very cargo cult mentality from the outside. It's buzzword level and faddish and I worry Target is running with this to a ridiculous degree.

Target is good at many things, but they are very bad at breaking groupthink and this has always been a problem there.

It is so crazy that the TTS organization and the Stores organization could be part of the same company. If a DTL consistently dropped deliverables over a 90 - 120 day period they'd be gone in a heartbeat, let alone year after year.

@EIqMdOq-qdy they have mostly all hands on deck with the 100 or so .com and mobile teams in TTS. I have been a vocal skeptic about the TTS direction on .com and mobile and because of that, they definitely do not want my help. they think TTS has the talent to build .com, all the monitoring, infra automation, and analytics to prepare for something like cybermonday.... it is only a few TTS GM and SGM who should be accountable for this folly. They spread lies on their results. I would be glad to lend assistance, but based on the frenzy I am seeing over my cube wall today, one more person running around with their hair on fire won't help solve the website outage that is STILL happening! Lots of new faces walking the halls in TTS today, lots of not so FFF faces, big wigs, etc., not so sure everyone in TTS makes it out of this unscathed.

OP - TTS has adopted a NEW strategy that they have been trying since at least October 2013. perhaps this EPICFAIL on their part will shake things up. "expect more, but don't even get an chance to pay less because checkout on .com and mobile doesn't work!"

of course we're not ready! watching people run around TTS today like they have a plan is sad. I went to order something at 9:15 AM cst, it didn't work. I tried again on and off for the next few hours, still no good. Almost made it through to checkout once, but then got an error. All while trying the same through the mobile app with worse results! it is now 1:38 pm CST and I am still receiving messages (friendly BS* errors) when trying to add to my shopping cart. This is what we get for listening to RC, MW, JE, and the devoops clan telling us we should build everything and opensource everything! to see them all scrambling now is quite satisfying, but super depressing for tgt. half the cyber Monday is gone! Amazon got my money about 2 hours ago. #devoops == nothing to show for all the wasted time and effort. we need accountability, doubt there will be any.
