It's becoming impossible to ignore the fact that certain people get access to opportunities the rest of us don't even know exist, not to mention are considered for. It's always the same names for every good project, every interesting assignment. I guess hard work doesn't matter if you're not in the right group.

Oh yeah. It’s embarrassing to the poor folks trying to fake it until they make it but you can overextend and when the company policies actually reward such nonsense. Ja----s farm. But still best place to work
Those are called "connection" and "reputation" - happened everywhere. Once you got on the "good list or let's call it dean's list" of your VP/SVP. Your name will be up for every opportunity and promotion. Some people are very good at capitalizing that and reaping the works from a group of people into his/her. That just a fact in the life. Nothing you can do about. I have ultimate respect to those people in good list but can personally deliver big time thing not just BS slides. I have run into some in my career and 4-5 in CISCO (of all those PE/DE). The % in CISCO is very sad.
@bf The captain goes down with his ship I guess
@eh kitkat
You don't get tens of millions of bugs from competent management and engineering.
@bj It's not what you know. It's who you blow.
you don't have the brown nosing skill that is needed to climb the ladder
@ck heck yeah. I’m also relentlessly operationalizing the mission-critical foundation of our high-velocity roadmap by leaning into a low-visibility, maximum-bandwidth ecosystem that prioritizes the strategic milestones of our visionary core over individual recognition
@bf I actually drive value through being a stakeholder spreading and delivering value while optimizing and stylizing outcomes while circling back.
@bj its who you are talking to once LR'ed(1 year or 2 year later). Parasite IIT DIRs/managers are hunting ... want to send their IIT friends your way with out you knowing... most of them are pasties with big grades... who know nothing ..
It's not what you know, it's who you know.
Who cares what you think?
I get bigger raises, bonuses and more stock because of my relationships with management. I’m earned those relationships through my stellar work and all the money I make the company.
If you’re not in the circle then you’re not delivering enough value to be in the circle.
I mean, this is nothing new. At all. This is how the world operates and has always operated. That is why networking and building relationships is important.
You know where I think the usual circle can go?
That's right. It goes in the square hole.
It’s the same situation on my team essentially. Just the really senior folks on the team seem to get promoted every time while all of us peons continue to grind for 0% raises.
Don't worry, you'll someday get your opportunity to put together a slide deck for your manager's manager to present at the next Cisco Live.
