Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

How does promotions work

I noticed most people on my team went up a “level”

I got a tiny raise

I thought I was performing well, and never had any complaints

How does one level to another level promos work at Dell

@x8 That's not how it works on my team in ISG support. Every last male that has taken more than a week of paternity leave over the past 10 years has been put on a PIP upon their return.

how about men taking paternity leave, breaking it up a month at a time over the course of a year and then getting promoted. You didn't work three months of the year and got promoted. Seriously.

It’s honestly frustrating that someone in an office-based role got promoted without even coming into the office, while I’m here consistently every week and only received a minimal raise. It feels like there’s a double standard—my manager closely monitors our attendance, yet others don’t seem to be held to the same expectations. And with gas prices being so high, it’s surprising nothing has been done to acknowledge or offset that. It just doesn’t feel right.

I wish I knew what it was like to work for a true leader in this company.

@e1 the bumps tend to increase as you pass through grades. i6 to i7 isn't huge. i7 to i8 a bit bigger. i8 to i9 pretty significant.

all on avg of course.. could vary depending on job family, where you are in current band, other factors.

to people talking about politics - stop thinking of it as politics. you need to be good and have a bunch of people see you be good. and not just good, but performing at the next level. that isnt as simple as doing really good at your current job, that only means youre really good at your current job.

if you are not visibly performing at the next level you dont stand a chance. if you are visibly performing at the next level its still incredibly competitive.

@aq Which is weird because if you are on say, the high end of an i6 pay band, a promotion would be more of a title change and not so much a vast salary increase...

I'm an i6 (sr analyst) making 115k/year, and I think an i7 (advisor) starts at like 120k. I mean, i'll take the bump but 5k for a promotion isn't exactly great lol. 15-30k would be ideal...

If in the US, you have to have a GREAT manager who loves you OR, and the most likely scenario... have to jump ship to another team for a promotion.

I've been here 7 years now and started with a team of 6. Over the years we grew to a team of 13. Of those 5 OG's, 2 were fired and 1 went to another team for a promotion leaving 3 of us OG's. We had the same manager for 5.5 years and he was an AMAZING manager but, I don't feel like he fought hard enough for promotions.

Long story short, nobody on my team has ever been promoted... and now due to the random managerial reorg last year, I have no hope of promotion anytime soon.

Step 1: Live in India, Mexico, or Ireland
Step 2: Don't live in the USA
Step 3: Don't live in the USA

My manager told me that promotions are typically given to those overseas as it's far cheaper to promote 5 indians versus ONE US employee, and that the way dell is going doesn't forsee many US promotions happening anytime soon - or very often...

@cg this is correct and this is why in role promotions are very rare and looking outside your organization for open roles at that level is a much easier path

First, promotions are not rewards, they are a necessity. Simply put, if your team is not posting a req at that level it means the team can be successful with the current grade levels and there is no promotion justified.

If the team does need that level of skill then it becomes a matter of you becoming the best candidate for the promotion, not just on your team but across the org. Your name will be put on the list with others vying for the same level, managers will meet and discuss why their person should get it and then they will select the best candidate from all or the number of people that matches the total number of promotions available

You can be the highest ranked on your team and still be the lowest ranked in the org against the other candidates

You're either related to the one deciding or you happen to be liked by your manager and preferably the ones above him/her.

You have to play the game of internal politics and play it well. Think of it as a live action version of Game of Thrones where you form your alliances and you'll do great.

Some people try to say it's a meritocracy, it's not. Actually being good at your job will only get you so far.

Well, first you'll need to know when to use, "do" vs. "does"...

It’s all subjective.
Several of us were laterally transferred to a new team several years ago. The manager bumped up my pay a bit but not the others. I felt a little bad. (But not bad enough to refuse the mone)

@OP They don't. There is no logic to it. It's all based on how far up your manager's a-s you want to live.

@OP The short answer is they don't. Especially if you are based in the USA.

got a promotion this month. Yeah basically got bumped single digit percent since I was on the upper salary limit for the lower role (allegedly).

Probably if I went and applied for internal req for higher level vs got promoted, I'd be on more money than now

You basically need to be right at the limit of your salary band before they can promote you, regardless of performance. (Unless you are remote, if they want to promote a remote person it has to be approved by JC)
