@pq No it was not us. Most hiring for decades required a college degree. You were hired for your potential and attitude and skills and track record and work ethic etc. You were not hired because you are non white, young, outside the US etc. Most new sales are RCG recent college grads. Come in band 6 while band 8 9 10s are PIP'd out. Most know nothing about IBM other than happy to have job. I have seen ALOT of comp sci, data scientists etc come in and go to GSS global sales school for 6 weeks and be told they are the smartest people on the planet and be given a laptop and a quota and told to begin cold calling a list of 200 accounts. They leave IBM after 9-18 months. They get none of the great mentoring we got. Zero. Many were working at Ulta 3 months ago. Or Poli Sci majors. IBM now has 2-3 times as many employees in India as the US because IBM loves chasing offshore cheap labor thinking they can save their way to prosperity. IBM no longer has IT support. No longer has HR. What they do have are a bunch of horrific home grown chat bots built on watsonx that work as well as a flashlight with no batteries.

In case you haven't been paying attention, AI is taking over, you don't really need all those cheap (and worthless to big corporations) Gen Z grads any more - not even when the old boomers leave, retire or kick the bucket. Gen Z has a big problem and we all know it - NO jobs or a HUGE lack of jobs. More and more data centers will be using robots by this time next year. Every Hi-tech company - Microsoft, Google, Meta, Oracle etc. - is going in that direction. They would rather pay big bucks for electricity generation to run the AI in the data centers than hire any humans. It is all about cost controls and cost management to juice the bottom line. IBM is no exception. Look at the news headlines every day this week and see how many layoffs are being announced by the big corporations. Hiring is down, not up. Add the layoff numbers and you'll see that your statements do not apply to the vast majority of people who are being laid off. Comrade Alvind and his message of hiring is full of Sh-t, as usual.

Well according to Wall Street, Shares of Amazon have increased 4.9% so far this year, while the Nasdaq is up approximately 24% over the same stretch.

So they need to cut more if they want the stock price to go higher.

@pk

“ College graduates who have never been in a data center, never talked with a customer”

Wasn’t that us when we started? It really is okay to hire young people.

We shouldn’t randomly layoff but it’s okay to replace older ones with younger ones when they leave and promote within.

@pd thank you for posting. AK is a serial liar. They are aggressively forcing out higher band levels and plan to "hire more college graduates in the next few month than we have in the last few years". College graduates who have never been in a data center, never talked with a customer, will take 2-3 years to be productive but will be 100% compliant and be thankful for a job. He is on the biggest lying platform on the planet; CNN. A perfect %^&* storm of AK on the CNN toilet.

Didn't think it was possible but when you put it that way, between the two cue balled jackwagons, Bezos actually comes off looking like a halfway decent, compassionate oligarch next to Alvind. Imagine being a bigger dooshcanoe than the guy who rented Venice for his second wedding to a blow-up doll.

One of the employees being let go at Amazon is shopping for a boat. I spoke to her and she’s the least bit worried. Loads of stocks and $340ish base pay is keeping her spirits high.

guess what they each amazon employee got 90 day pay without work and 4-6 months of severance on top of that based on years worked .. IBM does not give sh-t and breaks laws by selective RAs in diff units in diff months and some RAs are just their way to restructure teams they messed up over time because of changing decisions they make every 6 months or replacement in cheap location. all ibm does is financial engineering

When I was laid off, my manager was laid off the same day.

@cd fun fact that was the single biggest mass layoff in history and held the record until earlier this year when fElon and his doge collaborators offed federal workers in the US. So IBM really is a world leader in this space! So proud.

Middle Managers? Well no chance of that happening here. Have you ever seen any manager or managers laid off? I haven’t.

IBM can’t layoff 100k USA employees, because there are only 50k left. Yes that includes everyone and everything (eg corporate, sales, services including TSS, consulting, redhat, etc etc) With that said could they cut 10k per year for the next 3 years. The magic 8 ball says “likely”

That's nuthin. The G Man Gerstner did this damage with not a care in the world; I was there. First time I saw entire IBM sales branch offices off 100+ people cry openly:

Under CEO Louis Gerstner, IBM laid off approximately 100,000 to 150,000 employees between 1993 and 2000. A single large layoff of 60,000 jobs occurred in July 1993, with additional large cuts continuing in the following years as the company underwent a massive restructuring.

Only 30K jobs to be lost at Amazon ? IBM Management under Comrade Alvind can easily beat that number by firing at least another 100K US employees, starting from the bottom of course. Then 100K jobs will magically appear in India in different job families, with different job titles and modified job descriptions. It's divide and hide, of course.

Well it’s not as bad as they were leading the media to believe. A few hours ago we thought it would be about 75k.
I guess they learned the art of perception management.
