Promotions Make No Sense Once Again

Today's promotions, for the most part, are an embarrassment. Some were well-deserving, and some I totally scratched my head over. So many others, so talented, were left in the darkness. For the life of me, how do they get this wrong each promotional cycle.... Be prepared because some good people are planning to leave, and when they do, those newly defined managers will be lost.

@qm intimidation in a moment of shock or surprise doesn’t mean much. Document everything and consult your attorney. Hostile work environment.

@k9 speak for yourself. my boss has threatened my job with poor performance evaluations. the only formality is for HR to have legal grounds to terminate you

Throughout my tenure at Canon USA, performance reviews functioned more as a formality than a meaningful evaluation process. Reviews lacked rigor, consistency, and actionable feedback, particularly when reporting into Japanese management structures.

In many cases if not all the time, Japanese managers demonstrated limited capability in people leadership, performance assessment, or talent development. This has contributed to a promotion culture driven less by results or decision-making and more by deference, alignment, and personal appeasement to the “Japanese-San” culture.

Advancement has become correlated with conformity, the lower you bend forward, the more you use -San when talking to them, rather than accountability. Individuals who avoid difficult decisions, reinforce existing hierarchies, and consistently align upward are rewarded, while independent leadership and critical thinking are discouraged. Look at all the American Directors and above, they all have the same Kiss a-s DNA.

Yes, if you are in support function you either have to be located in Melville or Japanese to be promoted. If you are Japanese, you don’t even need experience or to prove yourself in the area you are promoted in.

couldn’t agree with you more. I happened to cross paths yesterday at corporate HQ with someone who, in my opinion, should have been elevated, and I can tell you this: they were not happy, and some were just numb and didn’t even want to discuss it. Can someone please explain how SB and CA from managed services deserved promotions? A few on that list I question, but I'm too disgusted even to continue this chat.
