Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

What do you have to do to get a promotion here?

I keep having conversations about moving up, about what I need to do to get there. I do all of it. Then nothing happens. The goalposts keep moving, the budget supposedly gets tight, or somehow the timing isn't right. I'm starting to wonder if these conversations are just a way to keep me motivated without any real intention behind them.

Promotion here?

Well, based on the track record around here, it seems like a close familial tie to upper management might do the trick - spouse, sibling, or at least a second cousin twice removed! 😜

@te Did being married make him a better engineer or did having a pet make her a worse one?

Either way, yeah, you sound like you're in love with that guy.

Being a woman helps. My team had a staff engineer who was a Linux kernel expert. He was middle aged and married. The was also a young cat lady who did nothing but compile code all day and write nicely formatted documentation. Both got promoted to senior staff the same cycle. I couldn't understand why it took so long for him to get promoted and why she got promoted. Seeing stuff like that is why I left. Later, he got laid off, but she's still there.

The quickest way to get a promotion is to take your lead and his lead into the meeting with cross functional teams and let them present your work. Slog your a-s off to make the PPT for the entire week and review it with your manager/lead (director/Sr Director). Go into the meeting acting d-mb and letting the leads answer all the questions. Unfortunately it’s not the MAG7 where the leads have their own real work to do. They need to show the work of their teams. Used to be a principal at Q so I can speak with some experience. Once I saw the real world I realized what a waste of time chasing titles at Q is.

@g7 You must be one of the Q managers, proving everything that is wrong with Q. Arrogant, vile and said nothing of relevance. Have a nice downfall with the rest of mo--ns.

@ev , the world goes great for me -- now that I am out of Q. I didn't mean to say that's not how the world in general is. I meant, that's how Q is. It is NOT a meritocracy. It is not a fair, just system of promotion based on performance. It's based on cronyism between the Director/VP levels that play games with engineers lives, their careers, and mental health. In the real world, yes, you work hard, and you will see the fruits of your labor, most of the time. But at Q, the game is rigged, the performance reviews are rigged, your score is determined even before you write any lines of code. The root cause is corrupt and incompetent middle management. Many blame CA for this, but I disagree. I think he is so out of touch with the quality of middle management, he doesn't care or want to care. HR knows this too. They're as much of a pawn in this game as any other low level worker.

Its kinda sad to see people thinking "if I do this, then that will happen and I get more money". Um, no. That's not how the world goes. Its not a frikkin video game.

@c5 The questions you ask are totally irrelevant in Q except the question related to the leadership annoyance. But to annoy the lazy, corrupt, stupid individual with the overblown ego is a peace of cake even without intention. One just need to ask awkward and obvious question once or make an innocent remark. This is the game you cannot win without giving up on your convictions and professional integrity.

More info OP. How many years? Is your org in demand? Which level are you trying to move to?

Sometimes doing work is not enough. Have you been annoying and leadershipy?

@OP you just had epiphany. It gets worse though, as soon as you express your displeasure with the things happening around you.
