Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Can you ever truly prepare for a layoff?

I did everything recommended to prepare for being laid off. I updated my resume, networked, sent out a few feeler applications, I've been saving even before this but I cut my expenses further in the last two months. I have also made sure to keep my skills updated over the last few years. On paper, I'm fully prepared if my name is on the list. In reality, I'm still petrified of that happening. I don't feel ready for something like that, despite all of my preparations.

Find a side business you can do that allows you to make passive income. Grow that as much as you can during your off time at Dell. Determine what avenues you could do to grow that and eventually work for yourself and if you do have to have another job, do something that is fun/enjoyable. Obviously minimize and/our cut out any unnecessary expenses. Simplify your life. .

I feel the same. Our Dell manager told us our entire department is being laid off in a few months so I cut all my subscriptions and am saving every penny. I feel so sick every day just waiting for the axe to fall.

I've put out job applications for full time and part time but can't get an interview. The majority of jobs out there are scams and no worth while company is hiring.

The best strategy for a job loss is simple. Live simply, save too much, and be prepared for new opportunities.

Live like a retiree or broke college student, and you’ll survive even the worst job market.

If you’re overwhelmed by debt, have unrealistic expectations for the future, overspend on stuff, or assume your income will always increase, I’d recommend another plan.

Take what you learned from dell, and do something spectacular. Odds are, dell undervalued your potential.

You sound like you are doing all of the right stuff. I think the only thing that you haven't done is take the step of getting really serious about looking for a new role. Personally, I would do that, mostly because you owe it to yourself to find something that doesn't have your constantly fearing about being laid off.

Any award winnings, inspires, higher up call outs, or career achievements you have at Dell I’d recommend pulling those and grabbing them for your next job interview if needed. Even if it’s taking a picture on your phone, I’m not sure about emailing personal email from your work computer but who knows. I’m in sales so I can prove my past years worth of sales performance to my next hiring manager if needed. My number 1 advice would be to stay off this site, as I know it can make anxiety spike. Rumors and gossip can be draining. We’re all in this together. Start applying outside of dell. Get a few good things going and beat the rush!

Always have 3-6 months living expenses on hand in an emergency fund. Doing this truly helped ease a bunch of worry. Worst case scenario I have that money I can use while I look for another job. This is a layoff site and not a financial site I know, but that’s my advice. At the end of the day this is just a job. That’s all it is. It doesn’t define you or me. It’s something I do from 8-5(ish, lol). I got laid off at my last job (not in tech) and you’re powerless so it’s not worth worrying about anyway. If dell lays me off I’ll accept it, pout and moan for a day or two then get on with my life. Remember, if you died today your job would be posted tomorrow. Don’t stress out over Dell, they don’t stress out over you.

It's hard to be honest. The best you can do is to be prepared. What helped me is having a group of supportive friends, especially who are going through the same phase and are in your similar general area
