Elements of PIP

Will my manager share anything about what’s on the PIP before I decide to do PIP or PIL?

@Op they will not tell you what any of the objectives or initiatives of your PIP will be until you accept the PIP. The good thing is once you accept the PIP and your objectives/initiatives are presented to you, you then will be able to determine if the PIP objectives/initiatives are doable and passable or if they are not passable in your 90 day period. Then within the first month on PIP, HR will offer you the PIL option once again. It is at this point where you decide if your objectives/initiatives are not passable or doable in your 90 day PIP period then you can accept the PIL which will be prorated by how many days you were on PIP and the remaining PIP days will be paid out to you in PIL. You still get your health benefits and your other benefits until the end of the month of the last day of your PIL. Just remember one thing, PIL is only base pay, the longer you are on PIP for the first month of PIP, the more money you will make. So if you are a rotator getting RIA or make most of your money in overtime, it’s always best to accept the PIP until you are offered the last chance PIL before the end of your first month of PIP. I am new to this PIP/PIL. I am not new to ExxonMobil but I did just go from a high rank straight to NSI in a one year timeframe. I was shocked but since I received the NSI and was given 21 days to make my final decision I have learned a lot about PIP/PIL from current employees and past employees of ExxonMobil. I do not agree with the system but I have been given my fate by the system. I have chosen the PIP and when I received my PIP objectives/initiatives, I thought it was a joke. My objectives/initiatives are extremely elementary and extremely doable and leaves me wondering how could this even remotely improve my supposedly low performance. There is nothing in my objectives/initiatives that are performance based nor anything that would improve anyone at any job. The one thing I see I might gain from carrying out my PIP objectives/initiatives is that I might become more effective in designing a PowerPoint presentation. Hope this helps you in your decision.

They cannot show you the PIP content until you choose to take the PIP. So you’ll have to understand the risk you take if you choose this route.

All of this is outlined in the MLRP section on EMConnect. Go there for details.

People are too short sighted. It isn’t just passing the pip that you should be worried about. The real issue is that you have been identified as a lot performer. The stink of the low performer label will never leave you. Your post and assignment opportunities will reflect this. Best to look for a new job

@by U reminded me of someone in my team who "retired" last year. His departure from the company was a little abrupt when he suddenly announced that he was going to retire sometime around this time of the year. However from the tone of his voice, it doesn't sound like it was done on willing basis. I kept quiet but didn't probe further although his manager kept emphasing infront of the rest of the team that he "retired"..when clearly he was forced to. Putting myself in the shoes of that person, I find it humiliating.

That incident let me see how EM treat its older employees. The humiliation and amount of dignity given is inhumane especially how they labelled them as "relatively poorly" performing when they have done absolutely nothing wrong.

Most of the cases I know, PIP list was not shared until PIP acceptance is signed. If you are curious to see the list, you can sign the PIP. And once you see that the PIP laundry list is not doable, or you don't want to do it, you can switch to PIL and enjoy the pay for months. Or like what others are saying here, you can also take the PIP while you interview. Finding next job requires a let of effort too and so does your daily and weekly checkin while on PIP. Yes, there's daily expectations while on PIP, and weekly progress verification is done in person or mtg with at least 2 managers. Up 2 u.

The plan was presented to me with the improvements spelled out. It was specific in its goals. I was given a choice between pip, pil or retirement. They knew how to hurt me as the plan included cross training with others groups and travel to and from buffalo spwy to Baytown. They knew i did not like to travel and picked this for me. I would have to work at Baytown for 3 of the 5 days a week. I asked what benefit this would have on my career and they said it would make me a more well rounded technician. I had a week or two to decide. I picked the retirement route and was assured by the supervisor that I would have passed and they were sorry I decided to leave. I was over 60 and believe they were happy for me to go. I told my co workers that I was piped and forced out the supervisor interrupted and said I chose to retire. So I started saying I was piptired. The management did not like me telling employees about my piping. It has been about 9 or 10 years since my retirement and I still remember the details. I was never ranked low in my entire career until my last. Good luck and pick your option wisely.

They will not share the pip plan until you sign. Many times they draw it up after you decide to do it and then you see what its about. As the other poster said its very specific with various goals and timelines that have to be met. Make every effort to achieve each item. It does depend on the supervisor but if you do this, check in frequently and document it will up your chances.Much luck to you

PIP = Paid Interview Process

If you’re put on one, start looking for another job immediately, if you weren’t already. That’s the only element of any PIP that actually matters.

Do not sign anything! If they insist, tell your supervisor to submit the PIP form because you want it reviewed by an attorney and knowledgeable people outside of EM. Do not take anything for granted and be nice about it. Your supervisor will act like it's no big deal, but it's a ruse to get you to sign. If you absolutely must sign to start the process under a threatening posture from your supervisor, state so in a separate email and copy your personal email. They know the answer and can easily manipulate you to pass or fail. If you truly feel like you want to salvage any modicum of career with EM, then do it very wisely. In reality, your career is shot either way. The wisest thing is to use this time to find another job. Good Luck

No. They will not waste their time outlining as plan unless you select to do the PIP. If you decide to do the PIP, offer up a few possible items to make their job easier.

They have to. It will be a multi step plan. It will have very well defined goals and metrics for completion. Make sure everything is achievable in the time allowed. At the end of the pip process they will score the pip and if you are deficient in any of the goals you are out. If the plan is vauge or unfair protest before you agree to it. Remember it is up to you to complete the pip with the managers help. If you are getting good feedback and help from the manager you may pass but if not you are headed out the door. I know one who was piped he did not complete one part of a task. He was told he did not pass because of the incomplete task. He signed the pip stating he did not complete all tasks was let go. It was all in writing and iron clad. Becareful what you agree to and read it over before you sign. Good luck to you fellow pipee.
