Thread regarding 3M layoffs

How would you rate the performance of your direct manager?

I'm curious to see if there are any competent managers left at 3M. I'd give mine a 2 on a 1-10 scale.

Apparently double stars bolds the statement in between. Who knew?

Anyway, point is my last two managers, one of which was Canadian, were The Sh*t. I want more Canadian managers…they’re good people.

My last manager was Canadian (but lived in the US) and legit was The Sh. Best manager ever…and that’s saying something as my boss before them was also The Sh. My current manager I would classify as decent, but having two really great ones, and compared to other commentary in this thread, I’m clearly #blessed

Has anyone had a Canadian manager? I’ve had two since we became USAC/the Americas - and what a difference when compared to U.S. management!!!! Sincere, HONEST, trustworthy, and refreshingly measured in their opinions of 3M! Did 3M Canada not get their delivery of the “Corporate Kiss @ $ $ Kool Aid”? I don’t know if they both still work for 3M, but one does. Anyone else have a similar experience or was I just lucky?

Mine had a split personality. People never knew who was going to show up that day. I got under the skin of her bad side once, and thankfully had her peers on my side when it came to a rating for that year.

My manager is the worst I’ve ever had. A negative 100 would be nice. This person discusses physical attributes of employees because they are jealous and has no clue about what some of us do. It’s so bad.

I would give mine a 2 simply because no one gets 1 or 10. This person is extremely incompetent for the role, has no interest in learning what we do or what needs to be done to fulfil the responsibilty. Got promoted due to nepotism being a yes person to a director when this person's position was made redundant few years back.
Almost everyone in the team has reported to HR but there still parading like a peacock. An absolute bully, no shame of being incompetent, defensive when we provided 360 until almost becoming a retaliation. After 3 years still has no idea how to do the job and no plan of improvement. Self invite into ppls mtg halfway thru a project only to hijack and pretend he is part of it. Asks us to provide ppt so he can present and claim to global he solved the problem.

In order, from first to last:

8 - Good for a first boss, no complaints
10 - Fantastic leader, woefully unappreciated by higher management
4 - Meh
8 - Could get a vision going, but could also be spineless.
6 - Slightly better meh
2 - They hated me, I hated them, and neither of us wanted to be in the situation.
6 - Split personality, this person could be either brilliant and awful depending on situation
7 - Decent enough

My current manager and current VP of research are decent, good technically competent people who want people to do well, and are generally perceived in a positive way in the organization.

However it is inevitable that at some point in your career, you will come across a manager who will tick all the wrong boxes and your professional life will be miserable.

Another thing that I have noticed is change in personality and mindset when one assumes the role of a manager. In some cases, they go from friendly decent people to snooty, biased people solely interested in managing their own careers and the group they manage feel the brunt of this negative behavior.

Current manager : 0. The only thing they are useful for is to approve orders. They play favorites, bully those who aren’t a favorite, are terrible at communicating, doesn’t know half of what the people she manages does… the list could really go on. Someone like her should’ve never become a manager.

Previous manager: 8/10. She was really good, but I didn't realize it at the time. At the time I resented her for not fighting upper management hard enough on my groups behalf. I was really green here at the time and thought that input from underlings were taken seriously. I know realize her hands were really tied and she was doing the best she could given the circumstances. She knew what everyones job entailed so well that she could literally do everyones job if she needed to. I do miss her and wish more supervisors were like her

Never had a manager that was interested in my technical development. As a Division Scientist once gave me some advice, there is little business justification to promote technical people. The justification for upgrading sales people is running the business.

I spent 8 years in increasing roles and after numerous requests to work on an upgrade package, it all fell on deaf ears. So from my experience, it all leaves a sour taste in your mouth.

Mine (director) was a 9 out of 10. He had the unenviable task of being the hatchet man in 2022 and 2023 when his team was absolutely decimated over a 15 month period.

He was "old school" and had a sensibility that came from a plant environment. He trusted and empowered people to do their job. He didn't suffer fools. Don't waste his time and he wouldn't waste yours. He was direct and to the point, and most of his important meetings with his team were held over breakfast or lunch in the break room where he would foster an open discussion and problems would be identified and resolved in a casual environment. Got a great idea that would have a positive impact on operations? The credit went to you, not him.

He treated me like a human being and broke the rules to give me 10 hours notice before my elimination was official. He's been stuck holding a bag of sh*t while all of his team has been removed. I only hope he can retire or be eliminated himself before he works himself to an early grave.

FWIW - critics and volunteers are interchangeable. If you know what it takes to be a good manager, then step up and do it. I did just that and have worked very hard at it.

Mine is OK, 8/10. Very competent but a bit too interested in self-promotion versus letting the team’s performance do the talking.

I am on my 9th manager in 10 years. Some due to retirements, some due to cuts, some due to reorgs. I haven’t had a lot of consistency over the last decade, but one manager was great, 9/10. After reorgs earlier this year and new management yet again, I would say my current manager is nice, but just not a manager.

I wish I could say something good about my manager because I truly try to see the good in everyone. Sadly, I cannot. My manager berates, belittles and bullies everyone with the exception of a few favorites. This person thinks they are always the smartest person in the room and loves to micromanage those this person feels are not smart or capable even though they have many years of experience.. To make things even worse, this person is expert at gas lighting.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder (rating means nothing). He's a political animal incapable of delivering any growth or profitability. Rampant in the company & another reason this place is doomed. Everything will be done as Moni says very soon.

I’ve had some good ones and some really bad ones. Nice part about the bad ones is that they are usually gone within two years. I had one who was so rogue in his methods that he got himself fired back when you had to sc--w up really bad to be fired from 3M.

For all the ways I've complained about the things that are wrong with the upper echelons on here, I will give my current manager a solid 9/10. Never had a better one.

I would give mine an 8. He really tries to do right but he is driven by his nonsensical bosses directives and whims. I get it ... you have to manage above your level but he really is a common sense person. Shame his talents are going to waste.
