Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Does Dell do anything innovative?

Serious question. What does Dell do that is actually innovative? I can't come up with anything

I'd say the ONLY thing Dell is truly known for, is their monitors. They ARE good monitors. Though, I'd never buy one because as a gamer, there are loads of superior brands out there - Asus ROG being one IMPO.

But for the every day user, and even casual gamers; Dell monitors are pretty epic. That much I'll give them credit for.

Look at Apple as a prime example. They didn't necessarily "invent" the smartphone but they did invent something that made the smartphone industry explode. I'd argue blackberry was the first smartphone but apple went a step further and made a device that has no buttons and is user friendly.

Apple created the MacOS operating system
Created the iPhone
Created the apple TV device
VR glasses, systems - idk, something like that
Created computers specifically geared towards video editing, music, and other...
Created computers that were asthetically pleasing to the eye and, for some reason became a trendy thing to have.

Motorola did similar things and they were even more innovative than apple in all honesty.

Dell? Nada.
But to be fair, AMD, Lenovo, and HP haven't exactly done anything innovative either. BUT, they - specifically HP - has made attempts to appeal to a broader audience.

Dell inovating... LOL! Nobody is clammering to buy a Dell. Nobody's kid at xmas is asking their parents for a dell. No soon to be college freshman is buying a dell. They are boring looking and basic looking computers. They aren't bad computers by any means but, there is nothing special about them that makes anybody WANT a dell computer.

I suppose the ONLY people who would buy a dell are the gamers who get Alienwares - which was never a product, nor invented by Dell. Dell bought them in I think 2006 but, alienware pre Dell was in a league of it's own. Unique designs, beastly computers, ahead of it's time with LED lighting and even water cooling.

Dell bought that company and destroyed it. Alienwares aren't bad computers by any means but, Dell decided to start using proprietary parts that aren't typically compatible with damn near anything you could get from Newegg/amazon/Frys. Want to upgrade your CPU? Good luck. Want to upgrade your GPU? Have fun with that. RAM and SSD upgrades are easy but those aren't exactly what people want to upgrade lol.

Anyways, Dell has done NOTHING innovative at all. Literally nothing. They are severely behind in the AI world and the only reason they are IN the AI world is because of NVIDIA and Intel - which dell is partners with and just uses their chips.

Dell has created nothing that is innovative or new since the day MD started selling computers as a UT freshman. THAT is the last time dell was innovative. I mean, I'll give MD credit for that because at the time, it wasn't common for people to build their own PC's and he did find a market for it - whch obviously worked... hence Dell.

But as a whole? Dell hasn't done sht in regards to being innovative.

@ar lol sorry but, NVIDIA and maybe AMD are the ONLY AI hardware companies of those 3 you mentioned...
Dell is partnered with Intel - which is why the majority of the computers are intel, and Nvidia - which is why the majority of computers have nvidia GPU's - and dell just uses their chips and says "we are AI!" AMD is more of an AI company than dell is right now. They at least own ATI..

Patents do not necessarily equal innovation.

I have a couple patents, so we do innovate. But... That said, we innovate much less than we used to.

Processes inside are joke. Folks use big names for their big fails. They can't even make release once per year in power... Yet they keep same useless folks to make more stupid decisions, break working teams to mix them with less performing ones etc..

How can we make innovation when our leaders have no clue about the tech process ? How can we have quality when senior directors claim no need for regression tests?

Now they renamed QE as dev and they think they will magically start to be working better as teams or be super effective in writing new code.. at same time folks which made all bad design and process decisions in gen2 or our 'worlds most ram consuming UI' are still there making more strange decisions.

"Why make it easy when you can make it hard?" I mean hard for Devs, hard for integrators, worse of all hard for customers... :/

Ye sure, but we got "how's the progress?" And "can we close it?" human Jira bots running the show painting stuff green..

They are innovative when they deploy the bots to down vote negative posts on this website 😂

@bt they certainly do excel at cost cutting. The rest is hogwash.

They excel in cost cutting, making nearly the same quality product cheaper through supply chain optimization. It’s what Dell has been known for. That’s it.

Everyone thinks Dell is a joke. So many others out there growing and innovating. Dell is limping along and sinking like the titanic. The layoffs are because Dell is FAILING!

nope, falling behind the competition and the latest releases of the PowerProtect products aren't going very well. Nothing new to bring in more customers, only upset the existing ones.

I just did a search on Dell Patents for 2024 and 2025. There are quite a few especially in 2024. Dell had 1888 patents in 2024.

Be examples to other companies what NOT to do if you want to retain market share, top talent, employee morale, and customer satisfaction?

Dell, NVDA, and AMD are the big three AI hardware companies.

The way they buy successful companies and ruin them could be considered innovative to some.
