Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Why do I hate my job so much?

There's really not anything about my job that's particularly bad.

I get paid a pretty good salary, I don't have to work too hard, I have 5 weeks of vacation and I get to work from home a few days per week.

I like my coworkers, the work I do is interesting enough and I'm good at it, and my boss is an alright guy, he's on the d-mb side but he's nice enough.

But I hate my job. I wish I could find a new one, but there just isn't much out there right now, so I'm biding my time.

I'm pi---d off about the layoffs that have been happening. I'm pi---d off about things like LTIP being yanked and RTO and the way that BB seems to be out of touch with how our company works. I'm pi---d off that there aren't any internal openings and promotions aren't real, so I'm stuck in my job with no change for advancement. And I'm pi---d off that it's clear that our leadership is trying to drive people out to put a sp-t-shine on the balance sheet.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I think the OP speaks for many of us on this...

5 to 10 years ago there were plenty of opportunities to expand your knowledge within the company and try working in a different part of the company every couple years. Since then, there have been minimal to no sideways movement jobs. Hiring externally seems to be the way lately. Plenty of 3mers have had internal interviews and lost to external. Hopefully the company comes around and engages with us again to evolve together.
Until then, brave the storm.

I like the way @nf is going around to ask the threads here telling people to stop crying or leave.

My friend, if you don't like what you read here why do you keep coming back?

Take your own advice: stop crying or leave.

I agree with the comments. At the point I realized 3M was going to keep changing in a manner I could not tolerate anymore, I retired. I retired earlier than I had expected and it was scary. With that said, best decision I could have made, as my overall health has improved by not having the stress of corporate life

make a positive contribution to the company that has put food on the table for so many years

3M didn't put food on my table all these years; I did that, by trading my time for money.

I don't owe this company sh-t. At no point did the company do anything for me just as a kindly favor. We had an arms-length exchange, same as buying stuff from the store.

@bs+1jjdpyz3a, a career coach can't do anything to solve the structural issues at 3M the OP accurately described.

3M is in the process of disentangling divested assets. The Board has already approved. You might ask, why are there McKinsey divestiture teams here? Why is 3M failing its employees? hint: unhappy people quit. Employees will be unhappy at 3M until there is no longer a 3M. Stop thinking there’s hope 3M will bounce back, BB was pulled in to complete this, assuming most people are aware of BB reputation amongst former employees.

BB showed his attitude toward 3Ms culture when he made snarky comments about Minnesota Nice and everyone gets an A. Try to survive the present and hopefully get the stock price up to where your GESPP is in the black again. Then sell fast because he is going to break the company into 5 pieces. And the spins will likely be saddled with the forever chemicals liabilities.

All valid things to be upset about. It sounds like you needed a coach in your career. Su-k it up and seek satisfaction in the areas that exist in your role and make a positive contribution to the company that has put food on the table for so many years. If you can’t locate positive things you can get satisfaction from, ask your team for support in doing so. You owe it to yourself to change. Btw: I’m not in HR or management, just a work-a-day Joe like you.
