After 13 years with the company i was unfortunately amongst the many who were layed off. I was completely blindsided . I am currently on FMLA and was given the news on Friday. I was told I am entitled to severance pay , or that I have the option of resigning and reapplying within the company . With the current hiring freeze and not to mention I would lose all my years … this just seems to me like they want to save them selves from having to pay me severance.

Take the severance, apply for unemployment, enjoy the holidays and start applying in January.
@c1 how to pull unemployment? Which office?
@OP Take your severance. Cash your check. They did that to one of my friends , she took the severance. After that they kept sending her job requisition. She reapplied 6 months later and was rehired and kept her severance.
You don't need to resign to apply or be considered for redeployment. If you apply for other internal jobs and decline an offer they can cancel your severance package. In either case it is your best interest not to resign.
@bp Taking severance would not disqualify you from pulling unemployment benefits. If you are laid off due to a RIF, pull your unemployment benefit immediately!
Many times, the severance they offer is minimal especially for the lower grade levels. Decide whether or not you plan on even wanting a job with them again. If not and you don't have another job lined up, then i wouldn't resign OR take the severance, especially with how bad the job market is right now. Either would disqualify you from unemployment.
You don’t lose all your years if you take another position within the company even if there is a gap between them. They just subtract the time of the gap and calculate from your original start date. So if you have 13 years in, but get laid off and then end up getting a job a year later your years of service would still show 13 years and you would still get the PTO and severance benefits related to the 13 years.
Don’t resign and lose your severance.
Severance is owed to you with a RIF unless you get another position at same level with the company. You don’t resign to take an internal role.
If you resign you DO lose your severance
