Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

HES support

This was from a previous user who took pride in saying this

"yes, I have been here 25+ years and yes, in symm team so I'd know who you are and none fits the description

So making up stories for 'the layoffs' is what you do - seeing what the response is - seems to be proper description

Now, as far as I can tell , should you be coding for symm team - you'd have learnt great amount of skills as not many workplaces out there offer system as symm to work on"

Has anyone in HES Symmetrix managed to get a role elsewhere? When I joined, I felt a great sense of pride being in "high-end" storage. The emphasis on "high-end" meant that it was flagship and safe. It does seem safe, but for how long?

If you have been with Dell/EMC for 25 years there is nothing for you outside of Dell. Not in the technical space. You won't be able to pass tests that potential employers require. There is no such thing as training for a job anymore. Employers expect you to be up to date with technical knowledge. Good Luck. If you get cut from Dell, you are in a world of trouble

@br I guess you downvoted my post :D as I said, it’s possible only in exceptional cases.

@bn I moved from support to engineering on a legacy EMC product. I then moved to quality afterwards.

Knowing the ins and outs of support cases and being able to remove them through serviceability is a really good skill. Knowing the ins and outs of the product is really useful. I don't know if it is possible to move direct from support to serviceability but its definitely possible to do something useful with your support knowledge.

Saying that though I miss support.. My work finished at the end of the day.. Be careful what you wish for moving... Something to be said for a nice support job. If I get a package I will look for something in support after I have paid off my mortgage.

You cannot move to engineering from Support… unless you want to move to India or China! But I doubt that even then they’d allow that type of a move.

However, there have been very few individuals that started building tools for the product and ended up being integrated into the product. But they too were in India. They did coding on a side as a hobby and coded these tools outside of working hours so yeah… still slavery.

very rare to leave support for "professional" roles without leaving the company. Unfortunately, too many at Dell think if you're in support, you're an unskilled mouth breather.

Is your question have people moved from HES support to other roles?

Of course, yes there is people who have.
The longer you are in a particular area the more niche your expertise becomes but there is still opportunities to move to other companies. Some of this will require you learning additional skills outside your day to day Job.
Many move to competing companies such as Pure or Netapp.

I don't think people with 5 to 10 years experience will become 30+ year lifers in the product like the old days however.

This isn’t EMC anymore where you had smart people and a company driven by technologists. This is now a manufacturing and operations company. You are an automaton in the eyes of our mo*onic leadership. T-shirt JC is a terrible leader who has one game plan. Lay people off to improve your profit margin.

So no. You’re not safe in this company.
