How useful is the conversation after being at risk? What's your strategy?

@be+1jk5xtapk - I agree with your comments. It's a formality that HR requires the team leader to have "the conversation." It's a time like that, I'm sure, that the team leader will have to do a gut check to be sure that you're not going to over-react. When they say they've not made final decision yet, you can be sure that's not true. All of the decisions to lay someone off is in response to the likelihood that you could sue them. One thing I will say about my team leader was that he helped me look for alternative roles within bp. Even as the herd was being thinned out in my BU, other BUs were hiring internal candidates. A funny expression bit of wisdom from those who were retained: anticipate the next layoff and to take advantage of it next time.

The consultation after being put "at risk" - the ultimate exercise in corporate theater. Because what's more helpful than a meeting with your manager to discuss the inevitable, where you get to pretend like you have some control over your fate?
It's not like the decision to lay you off has already been made and this is just a checkbox on the HR checklist. I mean, who doesn't love a good game of "let's go through the motions" where you get to ask questions like "what can I do to save my job?" and receive responses like "we'll take it into consideration" (code for "you're toast"). And of course, there's the obligatory "what are my options?" question, which is always met with a sympathetic nod and a pamphlet on COBRA benefits.
Your strategy should be to bring a deck of cards and play solitaire while your manager drones on about "restructuring" and "synergy", because let's be real, this conversation is just a formality. The only useful thing you'll get out of it is maybe some practice in maintaining a stoic expression while your career is being dismantled.
