Once laid off, I think you can go on standby for unemployment and wait for recall without having to search for another job.

When they do their ranking for layoffs, those who have no ranking yet are designated R4s. R3s are just bad engineers. R4s are so new that they know nothing about you and care even less if you are there or not.
Get your resume polished. You will have a lot of competition come July.
