Interns and Gen-Zs

Kids just don't care... Kids just do not see work the way the rest of us were taught to.

A lot of them look at the employer-employee relationship and see it for what they think it is: a bad deal. They can tell workers are doing the actual work, getting paid next to nothing, while the real money goes to executives and shareholders.

So when they act like they are not bought in, that should not be shocking. They figured out the game and adjusted. A lot of us figured it out too, but because of how we were raised and what we were taught to believe about work, it is harder for us to change.

I do not blame them.

After 30 years in the industry, I’ve learned one thing: regardless of whether it’s an intern, if they demonstrate potential and their work is relevant and skills are exceptional, I’ll support them, no matter their background.

@cg the entitlement you are referring to is way more prevalent in Millennials rather than GenZ imho

Did ops get cold shoulder by interns currently? Another factor now was a lot of CISCO US interns came from high-level connection backgrounds. Those kids grew up in an environment everything was available for them if they asked. Majority of them were convinced by their parents that they will be the next big shots so they aimed very high. Like what projects they want to work on, even how to. They were hanging around those highly politized DE/PE/CTOs. If LMs did not agree - then can go t their Daddy/Mommy to grumble on old thinking etc.. If I am a "leader" in CISCO, I will try my best to avoid them all together. Their attitudes were problematic and you know what - their parents often arrange Angle funds for them to start up after internship. Many of them don't give a dime about what LMs think of them. It is a different situation all together.

Forget Gen Z, ask why Gen X and Millennials continue to be bootlickers at a company that underpays, undervalues, lays off randomly, shuts down career growth...

I started doing hardware and software development in the 1970s and even back then only a relatively small percentage actually cared to keep learning and continually improve. Back then at a large company when the clock struck 5pm people would flood out of the building like rats fleeing a ship.
