Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

How can Americans save themselves from getting laid off.

The world has changed and Americans now have to compete with global workforce. Now, the global workforce (workforce in India, etc. and H1-Bs in USA) work for much less than what Americans want.

Now, the companies of USA want to increase their profits so they will use cheap labour. They actually don't care about Americans, they only care about their profits and revenues. It is quite evident that the companies want profits even if they have to layoff Americans.

By the way, these all are the side-effects of capitalism.

So, now the only way for Americans to not get laid off is to ask the management to reduce their salary but let them keep their jobs.

This is crony capitalism! Businesses and banks were rescued by government during economic crisis in 2008-2010.

Corporate America bribing senators and politicians to outsource everything and shut down hundreds of companies.

World trade has become unfair trade. Many countries dumping products to make profits and ki-l local industries in other countries.

When rules are abused every where, government will be outed out soon as many were not happy with both the parties in the USA. They will vote for the party which will protect local jobs.

USA should stop other countries stealing intellectual property and ripping us for decades.
Change is going on and will go on for 3 more years.

Stop blaming capitalism. You're way off. ... Every publicly traded company is held hostage by institutional investors. This is separate and distinct from 'capitalism'.

Since you clearly don't know English, let me help you out:

capitalism - an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit.

Institutional investors are private owners that provide capital and by definition expect a profit. Nothing is all good so saying anything not perfect about capitalism is not capitalism is religious BS.

If you are sh-t you will remain sh-t, no matter if you are laid off or retained. If you get laid off and don’t looses your head and follow through the hard work of recovery you will never regret. The point that you were considered for layoff is not healthy for you and the setup. So better to move on and save yourself from the toxicity. That’s what real Americanism is about not otherwise.

I like the original post. Capitalism isn’t perfect, and if it’s left to run amok you can end up with monopolies and a kind of modern feudalism. Right now we are in a very unbalanced situation where the top 1% of households in the U.S. control about as much wealth as the bottom 90% combined.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with a little socialism, by which I mean sensible, pragmatic public or cooperative approaches to certain goods and services. For example, insurance companies owned by their members, whose goal is mutual benefit for all their members, aren’t strictly a capitalist idea, but they often provide better value and service than many profit driven insurers do these days.

Stop blaming capitalism. You're way off.

Every publicly traded company is held hostage by institutional investors. This is separate and distinct from 'capitalism'. Privately held companies have more (theoretical) flexibility with profit volatility. So if you're looking for a scapegoat, it's Blackrock, State Street, Vanguard, Schwab, and any other investment firm with trillions of assets under management.

Oh, and you're about 30 years too late with noticing "world has changed and Americans now have to compete with global workforce"

  • The US is a bit over 4% of the world's population and we think we're the majority of the earth
  • CPU time is no longer hundreds of dollars an hour and the internet makes far more information available so far more people around the world can build real skills
  • The law of supply and demand says if supply increases prices will decrease
  • Anti-education and anti-science is growing quickly in the US
  • We continue to borrow ourselves into oblivion
  • We actively vote to make all of this worse

We're well on our way to being a gas station with nukes plus truck nuts and fried butter. Yeehaw.

I am not against capitalism. I don't like communism either. But, what I am saying is that don't blame the companies for laying off Americans because the companies are capitalistic too.

I like socialistic capitalism/capitalist socialism, means like 25%-40% socialism and 60%-75% capitalism.

I actually didn't understand your POV. You are saying that it is better to risk getting laid off rather than taking a lower salary.

By the way, in my opinion, Americans can take less salary and keep their jobs and spend less (don't buy a house/sell your house, don't go on many holidays, don't buy expensive things, don't buy that's not necessary, etc.).

But it is my opinion. Everyone is free to disagree with me.

@OP

Great idea! Keep my job but make too little to pay my bills. Default on my mortgage. Live under a pile of twigs in the office parking lot.

But at least I've kept my job...

Western governments will have to take steps from discouraging companies from becoming shells incorporated in the US but operating mostly from India. Just deny government contracts for any company that has a percentage of foreign workers. Companies like Cisco rely heavily on government sales.

Also, the market will fix this. India is cheaper, that's about it. The work is mediocre. Our Bangalore org is OBSESSED with hierarchy and process vs actual results. It doesn't matter if the headcount is cheaper when the output loses in the market. Look at how far China has already outdistanced India for creating world-leading companies. India is only cheaper.

They companies are right. The question now is why there are any inside sales positions in the US. These jobs should be sent to other country call centers too. Oh... It's because sales requires grifting and bribes, and most customers don't want to buy from diverse sales teams. Got it.
