Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

What was the reason you were PIPed or laid off and was the pip fair?

I was wondering what are some of the most unfair reasons employees were piped. I know of one person who was piped because they did not delegate work. The employee had no one working below them and was not in charge of any group. It was unfair and they made sure he did not pass the pip. Another I knew was targeted because of communication issues. Not responding to emails in a timely manner was the reason. One person was asked to learn additional skills and assist at other sites. Exxon knew this employee did not like to travel so he failed the pip plan. So the pip can be easy or impossible to pass. Every pip reason I know of has been BS. Others that slept on the job or played on their phones all day have been spared. I have never heard of a pip for relevant reasons such as making mistakes, sleeping at work, being aggressive and violent, watching movies all day on the phone, and not completing assignments. Let us know the stupid reasons and pip plans.

Thirty years ago, if you wanted to be in management, you had to demonstrate to the Chief Technology Officer in Research and Engineering that (1) you could sunset bad ideas before spending $10 million on research and engineering only to put the project on the shelf, and (2) you had to demonstrate that you could look outside for technology before attempting to reinvent the wheel internally on "me-too" technology.

I miss the days when management was technically competent in the areas that they were managing in operations, research, and engineering.

So far only seen this process as intimidation factor and at the same time benefit the bias within. People have passed pips which can be for a few reasons. The older folks get NI with nothing explained. If your nothin the loop you will be manipulated out or in some fashion. There is no one here to protect the people who just work.

Agree that high performers (actual, demonstrated results) are targeted when managers or peers have the chance to do so. There are no checks and balances. It's the corporation's loss.

My Supervisor was 80 IQ points below me. Maybe more. Took 3 hours for obvious conclusions instead of 15 seconds that it took me.

@b6+1jjkadgg7 Other XOM employees are playing on the same team as you and are not "the competition". It seems like our performance assessment process is working and they PIPed you for a good reason.

You exceeded expectations, and it made the rest of the team look bad, automatic PIP.

I was told that I was 20 steps ahead of most employees in my global business unit but I did not have the patience to let the "other employees" catch up.

I falsely thought that ExxonMobil hired and expected employees to be 20 steps ahead of the competition.

So you think the expectation of teamwork, communication and continuous learning is "unfair"? About time you get PIPed.
