UnitedHealth suspends annual forecast, CEO Andrew Witty steps down

May 13 (Reuters) - UnitedHealth Group on Tuesday suspended its annual forecast citing higher-than-expected medical costs and said CEO Andrew Witty has decided to step down for personal reasons, effective immediately, sending its shares down 8% premarket.

Stephen Hemsley, who served as CEO from 2006-2017, will take over from Witty.
The U.S. health insurance industry has been grappling with increased costs since mid-2023 due to a surge in demand for healthcare services under government-backed Medicare plans for older adults or individuals with disabilities.

In April, UnitedHealth posted its first earnings miss since 2008 and a bleak forecast.

The company expects to return to growth in 2026, it said on Tuesday.

""Sir" Andrew's pals should be next. Wasn't Hemsley accused of insider trading???"

They are all included in the investigation....Witty, Hemsley and Thompson (yea I know he's dead). Not to mention the current Optum CEO has a criminal background we would all be fired for when they did our annual background checks (which is going on right now).

They want quick cost cutting and restructuring. I doubt we will get much communication about the changes either.
He is not a transformative leader, he is an executor. He gets things done.

What @bz+1jv4nat6z said is spot on. SH is ruthless when it comes to getting sh!t done. I'm frankly surprised he let the current group of clowns fumble things around as long as they have.

Hemsley is absolutely going to continue offshoring. People forget that offshoring at UHG began under his leadership sometime around 2006/2008, and he was CEO from 2006 to 2017, during which the entire global delivery structure was built out, especially in India and the Philippines. The fact that he was already Chair of the Board and is now stepping back in as CEO isn’t comforting. It means the board wants fast, controlled execution. He’s not coming in to slow offshoring down. He architected it.

And his email to everyone said nothing about the people. He talked about AI, cost, and streamlining. He is not a transformative leader, he is an executor. He gets things done. And right now, the bottom line is Shareholder profits. He was the chair of the board after all.

They want quick cost cutting and restructuring. I doubt we will get much communication about the changes either.

Hemsley was running the company when I was hired and we were trying to be the best and hiring SMEs and not warm bodies that talked a good game. The last 7years have been about DEI bs and offshoring labor to inflate profits. Witless has cost this company so much that his leaving for failure to perform(personal my a-s) can only be good! I am the one who posted last week about the stock decline, I sp-t and laugh at all the hater’s who hated and insulted me. The best revenge is winning!!

Witty has always been a sc-mbag. He brought his CEO playbook from GSK to UNH (via Optum). He has, parasitically su-ked the life out of every company he worked for throughout his career. The old adage is: "The cream rises to the top", but in this case, the business world has proven once again that sh1t floats. Think of all of the middle class jobs this one person is responsible for destroying. He's a menace to the business world, corporate cultures, and anything positive to anything hard working employees strive to be.

Oh, and to anyone who has busted their aZZ for him ,....only to be cast aside and layed off,....sleep well.....he'll probably get a golden parachute of 30-50 million when he leaves. Chew on that..

I really thought it was a matter of time. Most of the country thought UHG and UHC CEO were the same thing.

Post above says Healthcare has become too expensive due to old people living longer and so many other people on disability. 🤦 It's true though.

While offshoring would make sense to lower cost and make profits look better, Helmsley was never a fan of it.
I'd like to think that Helmsley coming back will be a positive, onshore direction.

Expect us to accelerate offshoring and replace as many 24-28s with AI as we possibly can.

Bringing back old Hensley, wow he moved to board chairman because he was under investigation at the time. Him and his castle in Minnesota. Boy these people are like the mafia, they just keep shuffling the family around. Well hopefully he will take all his people with him, first chop the head off of the major players all the VP ‘s from clinical services who did nothing but figure out how to milk the consumer .

What will happen to the gang and ridiculous outsourcing Witty brought with him, starting with Candyman. What a disaster!
