Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

If you are worried about layoffs…

SAVE YOUR PTO unless you are in an absolute necessary role that will not be reduced or eliminated.

Based on previous layoffs while at VZ I made it a point to max out and save my vacation and personal time year after year.

I still Took all my vacations I planned throughout the years and just combined it with weekends to minimize pto usage early on in the year so I had enough time to work my way back up to the max. My manager constantly tried to push me to use more towards the end of the year and I knew not to do that.

Thanks to that I received an extra 2+ months worth of pay in addition to severance. I strongly believe that people maxing out on vacation time year after year and having to pay out on so much vacation time was a loss to them with layoffs was the reason why the reduced the amount of hours you could max out on.

Also take your VPL!! don’t let leadership guilt trip you into not taking it they do not care! You only get that time once in your child’s life. Use it or lose it . I knew people who only took 2 weeks of VPL because they were applying for a promotion and not only did they not get the role but their leader pressured them into not taking the rest of their VPL.

@b3 some states do pay out the personal days. CA and MA are two of them.

@ea Agreed! Was told I won’t be eligible for unemployment for 6 months because of that money received. I’m also in PA. Unreal!

Yes, and... I got paid out for my 150% vacation balance. When the great Commonwealth of PA reviewed my unemployment claim, they are deducting the vacation payout from the unemployment claim. I'll run out of weeks of unemployment before I hit the amount of vacation payout. IOW if you are in PA and have a huge vacation balance paid out, you end up with zero unemployment payments.

@b3 actually in California personal is paid out. I got paid out on the allotment for both 2025 and 2026. Sick time is not paid out anywhere

Everyone's situation is different, of course, and the OP's point is well taken. But you also need to take PTO to preserve your mental health in this very toxic work environment. Always use Personal days first, of course. Don't be shy about taking a sick day if you don't feel well. Try to take your "big" vacations later in the year, so you have some reserve time.

I'm worried about layoffs, but I still continue to plan to take vacation days for actual trips I'm taking. I just won't take PTO for random appointments and days to run errands, etc.

Personal leave not carried over or paid out, and neither are sick days . Take both in 2026. I did what OP suggested about vacation pay out and the pay out for vacation time and severance combined helps off set taxes, which are shocking

#awkward as I'm currently using leave that I haven't yet earnt... but in principle a good point as the more leave you have earnt and not used, the more the payout.

However, in these challenging times if take the leave to try to find calm/sanoty over a little bit more money that'll get taxed hard anyway (in my country)
