Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Relo Letter call --- Need more info

Has anyone in any other markets gotten better direction from their management than we got on our internal call this week regarding selecting "NO" and what that means for having to stay to get severance?

It was flat out asked that if/when I select "No" on relocation and "Yes" to the severance by the March deadline - when will I be let go or when can I take another job and still keep my severance? There was no answer - it wasn't known.

I have an offer on the table and my future employer is flexible to a point with my start date as I disclosed this situation to them but certainly not 6 months down the road.

Any insights would be appreciated.

Here’s the thing: the more people who respond “no” to relocation the more panicked they become. If an entire team responds “no” then they are likely not going to enforce the relocation. I suggest you all respond “no”. Strength in numbers.

LOL - So we are being forced into and option by a date certain and then are held as indentured servants at their discretion to actually lay us off rather than uproot our family potentially causing us to lose out on a severance package we didn't want but they forced us to make a decision on? I don't care what level you are at - that severance is a meaningful payout. We need to then NOT look for a job until we are formally termed which could be days or months out? How can that be legal?

This is not how you treat people.

2025 Relo Race Participant, here. Notified in March about upcoming plans to - had to accept or decline option to Relo. Declined. Given 'more to come' spiel. Official "2 week notice" didn't come until July. All along the way, advised must stay until final date they offered on payroll or zero severance. Definitie crimp to the job search but they're waiting for you to blink and avoid payouts. Your choice to blink or get paid - but they will give you the final date and if that's your checkout date, that's how you get paid. Period.

They honestly might not know targeted separation dates yet because they don't know how many will accept or reject the relocation. I was a previous wave, said no, and my separation date was close to the date I would have had to report to Dallas had I said yes (about 8 months after relocation letter).

Before you get your layoff notice, you can still use up the full year's PTO and not have to pay it back. If you try and take more than you earned AFTER being notified, they make you pay it back.
There's also unlimited sick time (after a certain amount of days a Dr note is required) and like 40 hours of caregiver PTO.

In the past people were required to stay until the off payroll date determined by the machine.

I know someone who was hired as a virtual employee and they later then said "no, that won't cut it anymore". He said he wasn't relocating and they held him for almost a year, extending the off payroll date at least once. As with you, couldn't provide an availability date for future employers and if he left on his own, forfeited severance.

AT&T is a huge POS.

Good luck to you but if they won't give you an answer, you have to use your best judgement.

I can only tell you from past experiences. Selecting “no” to relocation and “yes” to want g severance? In the past people were required to stay until the off payroll date determined by the machine. Leaving before then meant forfeiting your severance. I saw this for at least 3 cycles so I do mount this has changed. Reality? The big man and the share holders are not interested in what’s best for you. It isn’t the same company it was pre CEO change in 2020.
