@1z4 let me tell you a secret. There's no RTO policy, Noone has ever seen this formal doc. There's just MD's email and that's it. So you can't break smth that does not exist.

Interesting the RTO policy, if I remember correctly, when it came out ALL Director level employees were mandated in office during business hours M-F. Now I know for a fact my director is lucky to be in office 2 days a week and when he is there MAYBE half day at best. So make a policy but all of a sudden people are not expected to adhere to it....

@f8 … thanks for the reply. That’s similar to my process, except that I filed the paperwork myself, and no mention was made of having to do it again. I do have documentation if needed though, so that won’t be an issue. I offered it at the time, and they just shrugged and said not needed.

I don’t know if you’d need scans to document the issue you’re describing. Probably an official note from your doctor would be sufficient. It’s a common issue…I have it myself, on top of the documented lifelong issue, and don’t even want to think about the pain involved in a long daily commute. Aging su-ks, but I guess it beats the alternative! Best wishes.

@m7 How much of that $335 is food? That's where you could cut back. My food budget didn't change at all when RTO hit. It's a little more prep work but if you bring food with you to work you don't get stuck paying to eat out or for overpriced cafeteria food.

@nx I worked from home, my position at EMC and later Dell was a remote job from the start.

Haha, I've just seen Dell's post on LinkedIn promoting Pro Micro as ideal solution for hybrid workers.
Hmm, but Dell does not believe in hybrid model anymore, right?
Or is it just a hypocrisy at its best?

@dt That I don't know. When I did it, I emailed my manager/director and explained the situation and they filed an HR exmemption for me. I had asked for 6 months and a few days later I was told it was approved. My manager/director did say that if it needs to go further than that then, we'd have to file another exemption. Which as much as I'd love to do, I won't because I don't have any proof that I have a medical issue if HR were to ask.

I have severe back pain/issues and sitting in a car for 2 hours/day isn't realistic for me. I have a bulged disk + sciatica however, can't afford to get the scans done as I'm not interested in fulfilling my insurance deductable to do so.

I believe I got this approved back in April and if so, then it's been 6 months now. I have my 1x1 w/ my manager in 2 weeks so I'm curious if he will say anything. He didn't even bring it up last month so, until he brings it up I plan on working remote.

As for you though, if it's a lifelong type issue then my guess is HR would want some type of proof of this. idk what but, probably something. The thing is is that HR isn't going to deny anybody a medical exemption - as long as it's not something like a broken finger or idk, anxiety or something... - because it's a lawsuit ready to happen if they do deny it, and they end up being let go.

For my exemption, I literally just emailed my manager and told him everything. That was quite literally it.

Our office is a joke, they fired all the facilities people. We have no coffee, no condiments, and now we've run out of plates. Not sure where the toilet paper is coming from, but it's napkins now.

@dp I’m at $250+ a month for gas and tolls. Hanging on until bonus. Then I’m going to bounce. I worked my butt odd this year, doing three people’s jobs. Plenty of openings where I am and they are either hybrid or remote.

@ag (or anyone who knows):

I have a medical exemption for a health issue that is lifelong. When I had my conversation with HR, they didn’t mention that it was temporary or would have to be renewed, or anything along those lines…they just changed my status back to remote. Does anyone know how I can tell if that exemption expires? (Without engaging HR, preferably. I thought maybe someone could share insight on how that typically works in the US.)

Basically no difference for me between RTO or WFH other than it costs me $65 more per month in gas and I haul literally every rechargeable device I own into the office so I can use dell's electricity to recharge them.

Well, I'm an hour from the office, not including traffic and when I started going in, I felt it was a massive waste of time, energy, gas, tolls, etc... I am the ONLY person on my team who goes to this office so I'm basically joining virtual meetings as usual.
I'd stay for an hour or so, grab a coffee and taco, then attend my morning meeting. THen I'd leave.
THEN i said F it and just began driving to the office, badging in, then going straight home.

I got a medical exemption but that ends here very shortly so I'll be making that drive 3 days/week and badging in, then walking back to my car to go home.
