Thread regarding 2U Inc. layoffs

Getting weird vague warnings?

Has anyone else been getting really vague warnings about doing your job right and staying ethical? It’s never directed at anyone specific on my team, it has just felt ominous the last few months with these vague threats of immediate termination for doing something wrong. Like if we make an innocent mistake and we don’t have crazy documentation of not trying to do something wrong, we’re out? Are they just looking for reasons to terminate people now?

If you think being told to behave ethically is a threat then maybe you are the problem.

Not asking anyone to stop venting and no one has to share info they aren’t comfortable sharing. You maybe should “let” people ask questions and let people decide for themselves whether they feel like answering. They were legitimate questions and not for the reason you seem to assume.

@awtz+1qPSCgEH If they’re doing this in one segment of the business, it can be implemented in others. Stop asking for identifying info. Let people vent. If it’s not effecting you yet then don’t stress.

@aywa+1qPSCgEH Are you in Alt credentials or degree? What function (ie se/marketing etc). Esp with the separation of degree and ACs as business segments, it would really help if people were clear if that are in one segment or the other when talking about student engagement, admissions, ss, learning, ops etc. The work needed to be done to get the house in order is very different depending on both what segment you are in and what function you are within it. No need to unnecessarily stress out people who are not in the same segment.

@aywa+1qPSCgEH Yikes. What a great path forward. I can smell the sustainability from here.

They are looking for any reason to terminate. I just had multiple colleagues silently terminated in the past week- none of whom were on a Boost or received any warning, and leadership won’t speak about it all, just pretends like it didn’t happen. No backfills either.

Watch yourself, don’t trust anyone, and look for that next opportunity before 2U forces you to without severance

What department are you in? Student engagement?

I’ve been told things like “you make a lot for an IC” and “you’re lucky to have a job” when providing honest and solicited feedback. So yeah, I think the company may want employees to fear termination. It keeps a lot people motivated to keep doing the dirty work and not complain since they know employees need the paycheck. Also, being terminated gives the company the financial advantage of not having to pay them severance. Even if someone is eligible for unemployment after being terminated, the company has already paid the tax to fund those payments.
