Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Beginning of the End: Extinction Burst

This is it for Dell.

We're experiencing an extinction burst. And if not for the company, certainly for the executive leaders.

As soon as the big AI players build their own servers like they did for cloud, Dell will be left with very little upside.

I had a Jira ticket open for MONTHS to change an incorrect date. We’re not inventing the iPod any time soon.

Dell sells AI platforms in quantity to just a few large companies. Elon and others. So when they start developing their own like CSP's, it's over.

I don't think Dell thinks that way. They just try and keep their head above water.

What Dell will need is a complete change of attitude by the board of directors and, unfortunately, the majority stock holder.
Remember, Apple stock was selling for about $8 a share when they came out with a ki-ler device; The iPod.

Does our boss have the imagination to come up with such a product? Do we have a culture where such innovation would be encouraged? Even the IP team doesn’t seem to want to talk about a product that isn’t already directly part of our business. I mean, back at the turn of the century what if someone at Dell had said I have an idea for a device the size of an Altoid can that will let you hold nearly your entire music collection. And buy more.

Our culture would have said; We make PCs and laptops, and mediocre servers. Now go back to work

The internet had it's frenzy in the late 90's / early 2000's. Once the frenzy was reached(dot com bust), you had some of the hype fall away and whatever was left continued. I see AI as no different. What is the hype with AI and what comes about after the dust settles? Who knows.

One the AI frenzy is over, companies that made significant investments with no real outcomes will pay the price.

There is something cooking. Maybe operational folks have signed NDA and in the next 3 years something will happen. Dell might go down the path of hp or ibm to sell off client business.
