What happens if you're on PTO on the date they are notifying those who will be laid off? Will they just wait until you return to spill the beans?

I'm a former Optum Sr Director and I had to tell a direct report he was RIF'd when he was on an airplane with his family on their family vacation. I knew he was traveling so I sent him a text asking him to call me, which he did during a layover. You are instructed by HR to do everything you can to track down the employee if they are on PTO, you cannot delay the news.
Absolutely heartless, brutal and unacceptable that the company would do this when someone was out on PTO or leave. Where’s the outrage?
They don’t care! I was conton PTO when I out of the country.
@ax 100! I know people have been RIFed on materinity leave.
I know someone called while on leave for a funeral. Managers must compelte the RIF that day, no exceptions. It does not matter if you are on PTO, materinity leave, medical leave. You will be notified.
Managers will keep calling
If i am on PTO, they can keep calling, I am not answering the phone.
They will still call you. They don’t care.
Our director was out on PTO when she got the call that her and our entire team were being RIF’d. The sad part is she actually volunteered herself to be cut to try and save us. They decided to eliminate all of us and her too.
@a3 oh my god that's brutal 😭
This is 100% correct. One layoff cycle guy was in line at Disney with wife and kids, and answered his phone to be told you’re laid off. God awful company!!!!!
No they will not wait, they will ruin your PTO. They do not care
@OP your manager will call you on your personal cell phone.
