Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Remember when they used to actually tell us the truth?

I sat in a meeting with a manager where they literally told us no layoffs coming. Not two weeks later, people were getting cut. What is even the point of these meetings anymore? The whole culture is just fear now. You can't trust a word that comes out of their mouths.

It’s true that HR will sometimes keep managers in the dark about upcoming layoffs. But if your Director, GL31, lied to you they just lied or they are managing teams of 5-10 and are laid off too. So many directors and managers with small teams, how those Mo-o’s have stayed this long is simply proof positive of cronyism!

@c8 Me too! And I'm finding it surprising just how underpaid I was as I find other opportunities. Frustrated with myself for waiting so long (15 years) to find something better.

Qualifications for manager: Must have multiple degrees from some online sketchy college, be able to lie, cheat, basically commit fraud because your told that it’s ok by your director. Be able to sit with a straight face while lying. Be able to repeat every BS corporate tells you and enforce said BS. Have no backbone to stand up for what is right.
Be able to sway weak minded employees into believe everything you said and be able to weed out the employees with any integrity and make sure those are gotten rid of ASAP.

There are no real managers at UHG. These people cannot be labeled managers because managers know about layoffs, they know what is coming down the pipe. They have input into planning. So don’t call them managers. They are just people who push a toxic agenda.

Managers/supervisors have no idea. Most of the time they are layed off with you

@aw “reckless”? I was told my team would NOT be impacted. Then at the last minute, they had to choose somebody to make the quota, so stop blaming people who were given what they thought was the truth to begin with.

I was laid off/ RIF on 2/19 , I had my 1:1 with manager and he said my position was eliminated!
Close to 14 years went through various acquisitions.

I honestly feel free, way too much uncertainty for me at Optum.

@OP Same here, but I’m uncertain if managers are receiving the full truth. Eventually, these "leaders" will be the only staff left, and few actually know how to execute the job assignments of those who were laid off. Some areas are already experiencing this problem. This approach to continuous RIFs is perplexing, leading to a loss of knowledge and functionality. Either we intend to run a viable business or we do not.

@a9 While that could be true, it is reckless of any manager to make such a claim in that case.

Most people under pg 31 or 32 are not told in advance.

Job security at optum doesn't exist and there isn't a good plan for leaders to be open and honest with their employees about what is happening. Know this and look out for your #1 - you!

@OP Honestly that manager is more likely naive than dishonest - they didn't question what someone else told them.

I can tell you that managers don’t always know and sometimes it is them being cut as well. Even directors don’t always know. Nonetheless it su-ks and the way the company does this is really sad.

To play devils advocate, managers most of the time don’t know for sure until the week of and leaders change their mind on dates constantly.

Is it possible your manager just didn’t know?

Look out for yourself, Leadership is out to lay off as many as they can. And are only doing it to save their own jobs. This will continue every month. Unless you are being protected by someone, you will be on the list. There is lack of integrity here. The ones that are smarter than Leaders and speak up get laid off.
