Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Nobody cares about institutional knowledge

These layoffs made that abundantly clear. So much invaluable knowledge gone. That's not something you can replace, even if you get the best possible newbies (which we're not getting, by the way, judging by the last few years). Ignoring this will not end well for Cisco, I can guarantee you.

Still have yet to hear from any actual employees that anyone was affected...at this point, I think the site is getting trolled pretty well.

@aj congrats on your courage and ability to find something outside. Is that world any different? I think not.

I joined Cisco from a company that was nimble, agile, paid well and was generous to its employees. I had a great career there and wanted to go up a rung of the career ladder, so I thought, to work for the [once] mighty Cisco. Judging by how much emphasis Cisco placed on its career certifications, I thought that Cisco would be an amazing company for techno people like me. I was dismayed by how wrong I was, how little currency tech people hold at Cisco and could not believe the nepotism I was met with. I promptly left as did many others.

The "institutional knowledge" at Cisco is the leftover lore, tech debt and patterns left behind by generations of D-listers.

On the rare occasion that someone with a brain accidentally stumbles into Cisco, they run into this, realize it is insurmountable, and just stop caring.

Cisco is not unique here...run into any older, too-large corporation and you will hit a force-field of institutional stupidity stretching back decades.

None of it can be fixed, but it can be REPLACED.
