Thread regarding Optum layoffs

I wish we knew what's going on

Why is transparency always such a problem with this company? A little honesty would go a long way, especially when people’s jobs and lives are on the line.

@14z The problem is 'moving into a role where AI isn't the best fit to replace your role' doesn't cut it, because leadership isn't approaching AI sensibly. They're focused on automating processors, engineers, etc. using generative AI. People who do actual work and who's jobs are complicated. They cut these people the moment the proof of concept seems appealing to them without factoring in edge case scenarios, or make their life a living he-l until they leave for greener pastures on their own.

The singular goal is to turn as high profit if possible, and bring as much of that profit home is possible for members of the board and high level executive. You do that by hiring those who can do the bare minimum to get the job done. Very often you will find leadership filled with persons of charming personalities. Sometimes you will find positions of leadership filled with bland personalities, almost always leadership is filled with people who do not ask many questions and do not offer many explanations. The end. That is the secret sauce to United healthcare in my humble opinion.

@12j his post he made indicated this exact path and I reached the same logical conclusion you described. I use AI all day, its accuracy is hit or miss.

It's not 2 for 1. It's more like 10 for one. Go look at Reddit BPO for Optum and you can see how little they actually make. It's sad.

@12j unfortunately, the ship has sailed and this is the direction. All that can be done is to get a side hustle, a job at a different company, or move in to a role in UHG that limits outsourcing due to contractual limitations and where AI is not the best fit to replace the role.

@c6 I know what you said is true but is there anything we can do from a legal standpoint to prevent it from happening. Also do you think the reason MV took his new role is because he will be the one going around helping to eliminate these other roles with his AI team. Meaning he will visit each LOB and segment and see where he can basically eliminate our job with AI for the US

Offshore yah right you get 2 for the price of 1 but the product su-ks. Move it all to the cloud to get rid of FTE and infrastructure then uh oh. Everything is billed a la carte down to the keystroke. It is in the cloud but cannot afford to run it after the panic of a few invoices. Now we have the new shiny object AI. Another boondoggle without a direction just overheard in the airport Amex lounge so we gotta do that too. All roads point back to the utter lack of leadership at the top just a giant money grab short term

@cy Leadership is currently wetting themselves at the thought of replacing skilled workers with AI/offshore - and despite how ineffective that sounds, such a thing has never stopped them from trying.

It's funny in a way since many of their 'job roles' are much more suitable for AI to replace.

@c6 You have zero clue what you are talking about.

It's simple. What offshoring didn't take yet, AI will finish. The Org at the highest levels is seeking to reduce head count cost through 80%+ offshore mix (long standing goal) with AI taking much of the rest. Not good if you are U.S based or a contractor.

I'm curious, what info are you seeking? I'm sure I'll get negatives here but the honest truth is if you are here, and you wanna stay here, just do your job. It's certainly not like senior exec are gonna tell us all everything in their heads. And BTW, none do in any company anywhere. with 100's of thousands of employees it's simply not gonna happen.

@as They are much like what anyone here would expect, people so far removed from anything that's going on who genuinely don't care so long as they have their cushy position. As long as they receive their fat paychecks and bonuses for LARPing as someone useful, they don't care about improving processes at this company, or understanding anything. You can tell who fits this bill because they always say the d-mbest sh-t imaginable with confidence.

At the risk of sounding brutally honest, it’s because they simply do not care. Leadership (generally speaking) does. not. care. about. us. That’s the rule. There are of course exceptions to that rule. The compass is broken. All in all they’ve lost their way.
