Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Perceived Lowest-Value Positions at Dell (from a strategic/career advancement standpoint)

  1. Entry-Level Consumer Tech Support Agent

Offshore, scripted support with high turnover and low internal mobility

  1. Retail Sales Representative (Field)

Limited influence; focused on consumer/Best Buy-type relationships

  1. Contractor - Data Entry / Order Processing

Typically outsourced or temp work; limited internal access or decision-making

  1. Inside Sales Associate (non-strategic accounts) Quota-carrying but stuck on price-sensitive SMB or consumer deals with limited account depth
  2. Call Center Representative (Billing/Returns)

Low autonomy, low visibility roles — often handled offshore

  1. Warehouse Associate / Logistics Coordinator

Operationally important, but low prestige internally and no pathway into tech or sales roles

  1. Internal Auditor (non-SOX, junior level)

Often siloed, repetitive roles with little connection to strategic org decisions

  1. Marketing Coordinator (Entry-Level)

Typically tactical campaign support; little influence on messaging or positioning

  1. Procurement Assistant / PO Admin

Transactional roles in sourcing; low strategic input

  1. Project Coordinator (non-technical, non-customer-facing)

Internal support roles that lack ownership or strategic scope

@br you probably live in Wonderland or in the US (which at Dell is the same).
Life at Dell in the rest of the world is completely different. When you ask, even HR and GBO (who normally are the ones with more visibility on the structure of business) tell you openly they don't have a full mapping, even at regional level, of org structure.
Many of them, so still HR and GBO, are often completely unaware of the existence of entire departments within the org.
Not to mention most of the business resources are often located in another continent, almost impossible to reach out to and often struggling to communicate in English.

Was this the result of research? Most of us don’t even know some of these jobs exist - maybe the OP is in HR?
