Thread regarding Citigroup Inc. / Citibank / Citi layoffs

Promotions at Citi

I’m very confused to what HR has to do with a promotion process. If you get nominated for a promotion and it gets approved by all required people in your LOB- how is HR going to disapprove it or say “no this person can’t get promoted due to x,y,z. “ can’t someone explain the process to me?

I've witnessed Boz0s get In-seat promotions with less than 2 years of service. So it does happen. Citi especially likes to pretend that politics is Not a variable in who gets promoted and that it's all about meritocracy and hard work. ROTFLMFAO!

NO employee believes this BullSh!t LIE.

@110 I did not say I got a promotion, I said it is currently with HR AND CAN still get denied hence why I am asking the criteria and why HR gets input so I can get informed in case I’m not successful.

Congratulations on being one of the 0.9% of employees who got an In-Seat Promotion in the Year 2025 !

Many thousands of employees worked just as hard as you did and they too believed they deserved a promotion, but instead did Not get one.

Hence, Quiet Quitting and just do the bare minimum work. There's NO incentive to work harder, smarter, better or bend over backwards for a MotherFvcker (Citi) that will NOT reward Employees anyway. Employees might as well just play the Powerball Lottery.

@cq well, if everyone is on the same ship, might as well get paid as well as you can. People that make comments like this will never have the opportunity so they need to knock others that can.

Keep pushing. As I said in my first post below, it might take some time. Life isn't fair unfortunately. Good luck!

@cw that and my manager told me it’s been approved on all levels and now waiting on HR but he sees it going a bad way. Feels like a tease and I work hard regardless of the BS going on. I do care about my job and my career and this is something I’ve wanted for a long time.

Because labour market is extremely difficult now - companies are either not hiring or there are thousands of candidates for a single role so the chances of being hired are close to zero, no matter experience and qualifications.

Why would you want to be promoted to rank of a Major on a sinking ship? Would it not be better to be promoted on a ship that stays afloat?

@OP

I went through the process in the past 3 years. 2 years in a row HR rejected my promotion (I was hired 3 years ago). Last year I was successful:
1) HR can opine based on internal policies (e.g. you cannot get an in-seat promotion with less than 2 years of service) or based on Comp&Ben assessment (i.e. whether there is a budget for opening a higher level position).
2) HR at Citi seems to have an unduly large influence on the promotion process - and that is probably due to the current state of the company, i.e. Citi is borderline broke compared to the rest of its peers (JPM, GS, MS). So HR has to push back on the majority of the promotions unless they are flagged as critical (like mine, I am a subject matter expert who joined from a way better rival firm and the rest of the team are bozos and my manager knows that).
3) The "HR does not approve" statement can serve as an easy way for your LOB management to justify them not wanting to give you the promotion. So be careful about that possibility too.
4) That said, I have seen people who managed to get VP to D promotions in less than 1 year after joining the company. So just some people are really good BSs / present themselves as key / difficult to replace. Bear in mind that this becomes really easy if your manager is insecure, incompetent and need to fill the role (afraid not losing the headcount for instance).
