Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

If TSMC does a takeover of Foundry then there would eventually be headcount reductions.

What is being considered also could include Samsung, GF and others, so Foundry might get picked apart.

No matter the case, none of these other companies operate with so many manager, engineers or technicians.

They operate to a build cost, which prevents the bloated fabs that Intel still has, starting with too many tools, which get too much maintenance.

Could see entire departments removed over time. For example, TSMC has a centralized Yield department and doesn't have those people at each fab. Same is true for development work, at TD and at the fabs (TSMC doesn't do that work at their fabs).

Intel TD spends more on R&D than the rest of the industry combined. Much of that is pure waste, which never leads to marketable product.

So expect a version of DOGE to take a chainsaw to the Fabs and TD.

@cb+1jm30zrgz I always had the impression that TSMC was a tough workplace.

That's how companies outperform, and it would be nice to see Intel shift performance management to be more like how it was in the past.

If you want a workplace that attracts the best, there has to be fierce competition.

Meta and others are bringing back the Jack Welch cloud ranking, which had fallen out of favor for a system better suited for the handing out of participation trophies.

Everyone is not special, and the bottom performers drag the rest of the company down.

Time to go back to the identifying of the Bottom 5% and firing them after each review cycle, then putting those in the Bottom 10% on notice that they are next up for termination.

The Bottom 20% get no raises and are encouraged to quit or improve.

Go through a few review cycles like that and you've got a high performing company. Not a nice place to work, but a place that is capable of richly compensating actual, real performance.

@d5+1jm30zrgz Agreed, it is just that a change to TSMC management would more rapidly bring on the much need fab restructuring that already slowly happening.

TSMC and other foundries centralize many functions, like how ROC is being centralized.

Eliminating Fab-specific Yield departments is a big difference, but also eliminating all the tinkering by Fab specific process engineers. That all goes away.

Intel has a large number of engineers and associated technicians who are essentially just tweaking the process, often for minimal gains, but at great cost.

Let me lay down some facts as an ex-TSMC employee. TSMC never let go anyone after 2008. 70% of the employee compensation comes from their bonus. If TSMC doesn't profit well, they will take away big portion of bonus. TSMC just need to cut 30~70% compensation away, and people would not do the same work with huge cut and leave finally. The performance will also affect individual's bonus drastically. This makes everyone's GL becomes their financial god literally. GL can punish disliked individuals with low performance bonus, which usually may be more than 30% cut of compensation, which also led these people leave. GL also rewards brown nosers with good performance bonus and they will sacrifice all their life to their GL to maintain their financial life.

Fake company Intel with old machines that barely work. TSMC will laugh when they take 1 step in the fab.

Trump and US likes to bully and beat partners at anytime. They can come to stab you and take as much tariffs from you at any time. It is not a good deal for any company to offer help and being ordered as a slave by Trump.

TSMC should cooperate with China, as Taiwan and China are real family, people are all relatives.

Shame on Intel and Trump to bully and force others to do what they not like. What a shame!!!!!!!

TSMC is not owned by US. Then US will not have any chip making company. Is this conflicting?

Bob may also be curious about the time you spend on thelayoff.com when you were supposed to be working.

But then Intel is already curious about that, trust me.

Be sure to have a good answer when Bob asks, 'So what is it exactly you would say you do here?'

Also see what you can do for an explanation as to why you sleep in your car during shift, and/or spend most of your day in the cafe.
