Just curious, if you could work anywhere right now, where would it be? It used to be FAANG (or MAANG, whatever we’re calling it now), but that ship feels like it’s sailed... or maybe sunk. What companies are people actually aiming for these days?

"you aren't making mid-100s working for local govt which is super easy to do at Dell."
Yes, but the local county employees get a pension that pays out 75% of your income after just 15 years. My sister retired at 45 and now gets $65k/year to sit ar home or di whatever she wants for the rest of her life. Not too shabby when the median income in the USA is around $39k

@ap+1k1b81sqe - you can make $150k at Dell easily
I went into technical medical equipment. Love it.
@ag Government agencies often have more holidays, bankable vacation and sick time, and pensions.
If you made $80,000 a year in an agency with a pension and defined benefit, then you need to make about 100K a year and stash 25% into a 401K.
In Massachusetts municipalities, 75K a year is not unusual for a tech professional and most of the time you’re overseeing private contractors who are on call and cover weekends.
@ad there are TONS of small and medium tech firms around. If that is what you are looking for, you should find it.

I can remember when there used to be medium-sized tech companies. But then the mega corporations ate them all.
In today's climate, it's all the same. Be sure you are not going from the frying pan into the fire.
Local city/county around here seems to take very good care of their people with pensions and retirement options after just 15 years.
FAANG or MAANG would be a universe better than Dell just the same.
self employed is the next move.
