Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

I wish I wasn't too old to leave

Spending my final years before retirement here is one of the worst options I could have imagined considering the state of things, but I have no choice. I envy those of you who don't have to think about your age when looking for something new. My age disqualifies me from most jobs from the start.

Look no further old-timer, your mission is clear: whip these Gen Z rookies into shape before you start collecting social security! Just keep the oat milk stocked and you might squeeze a solid four hours of effort out of them.

OP it's not hopeless. Dell laid me off at 55 after 20 years service following a careful off shoring of my group. I found a comparable job with less stress and more pay within 2 months. The s**ty US severance funded my 2 month vacation. Best thing that happened to me career wise. Hang in there .

The older workers are the best ones in the company! The younger generation just don't want to work. They want to sit on there a-s on a computer and not do any psychical work. They also have no sense of urgency, and no dedication to the job or the group they are in and they are not reliable, calling out whenever they want. Another reason why the older workers are more valuable and reliable!!

People have lived like kings by borrowing so much money. It is encouraged by banks, governments etc. If possible, don't fall into this trap. Do you really need a 3000 square foot house? Do you really need multiple, high end cars? Live within your means.

You’re not too old. More companies are hiring older workers. The Gen Z kids are struggling professionally and the older folks are mentors. Key is to obtain a skill than spans across verticals. Dell has programs for you to do this, take advantage of them. Project Managers (that everyone at Dell craps on) has the skill set to hop verticals, for instance. So do agency resources.

Age and no skill are the factors.

"I’d say 95% of employees at Dell are stuck there due to financial obligations, living paycheck to paycheck with little flexibility to make a move."

If you are living paycheck-to-paycheck and carrying debt, that is on you and your own poor decision making, Live within your means, don't take on debt outside of a mortgage, and even there pay it off in 5-7 years, and live debt free. You will no longer be beholding to Dell or any other specific job you don't like

Most workers are stuck. If they could do better they would. It beats the alternative of not working.

Ageism is out there. Try getting hired if you are in your mid 50s. It's big lesson to everyone. If possible, save as much money as you can, as early as you can.

Quite a few of us UK old timers managed to leave with a nice package. Helps to pay for early retirement.

The comment "However, if you were at dell for 1/2 decades you did this to yourself." applies mostly to legacy Dell folk. The EMC old timers are hostages to fortune.

Old timers were brought back to the office because gen z lacks the old school work ethic.

Age is a state of mind! Dell is full of old farts.

In order to be hip are you saying we should wear tee shirts, flip flops, be an annoying up talker, and sport a fake man bun? Isn't that JCs thing? I'm confused

You're never too old. Find a small company or start your own small business.

OP, I hear you! It’s a tough situation, and age bias in the job market is a real challenge. That said, experience and industry knowledge still hold a lot of value, especially in the right environment. If Dell isn’t where you want to spend your final working years, it might be worth exploring options that appreciate your expertise rather than dismissing it. There are companies out there that value seasoned professionals and sometimes it’s just about finding the right fit.

I’d say 95% of employees at Dell are stuck there due to financial obligations, living paycheck to paycheck with little flexibility to make a move. Given the current tight job market, many will stay put for a long time either waiting for an opportunity that may never come or until they’re eventually let go.

Most are trapped by their debt, age is not a factor.

I can only imagine the horror of feeling trapped at Dell.

However, if you were at dell for 1/2 decades you did this to yourself.
