Thread regarding Walmart layoffs

Surprised you’re laid off?

Why would anyone be surprised? They’ve known for 60-90 days who was going to be laid off. Just think back. What happened 60-90 days ago? Year end calibrations and ratings. All those meetings where managers and directors decided who they liked, and who they didn’t like. Plus budget cycle was happening and all those wonderful Indian offshore contractors met with all the Indian directors and VPs to come up with new proposals on how to displace more US workers and replace them with contractors, and even H1B hires. Directors and VPs got to get rid of anyone they didn’t want to keep. If there’s anything you should know by now, Walmart has no allegiance to associates. And if you’re a US based tech worker, your days are numbered.

@af Yes, there’s a simple, wonderful way to counter Walmart’s practices. Just don’t work there. And if you already do, get your act together and get out.

Trust me on this, it’s not about tariffs. It’s about getting rid of head count so they could fill from selected sources, bring in already identified H1B workers from offshore and turning tech over to outsourcing. Tech will be a commodity soon.

What can be done about that? We should do something but wonder what? Maybe starting with happy hours or group chat

Funny how Walmart layoffs have been happening regularly (sometimes twice a year) under the previous administration, the administration before that, and the administration before that, going back decades, sans-tariffs. Amnesia , yeah selective maybe.

Even as recently as 2024 there were several HQ Facility Closures, or the cuts to folks not getting the vaccinations and boosters during the pandemic. But yeah this one, THIS SPECIFIC ONE, which was planned before the tariffs, is all about the tariffs. It's not about cutting costs to maintain profits, not about reducing domestic resources to make room for 3,800 new H1B's, this one is all about tariff's. Even when it's known they could absorb the tariffs with little to no impact, tariff's that have been reduced and paused.

You know when Walmart started mass layoffs? A few years after Mr. Sam died, and what was happening then? A change in control, the company moving left of center, and the significant investments in China with the major holders getting richer and richer.
But yes!!! OMG this time for real, the layoffs are about the tariff's and not greed.

If only there were some sort of organization that could bring associates together in a cohesive manner, to amplify their unified voice, to provide a collective support group that advocates for the associate, complete with lawyers, representatives, and political action committees that lobby for the associate.

When you go into those 3 minute meetings to be let go, you are alone, while the person on the other side of the table/screen has a collective advocate team of their leadership, the legal team, HR, Board of Directors, and numerous 3rd Party organizations to "help". They were able to plan and prepare for what was about to be done to you, with no say from you and with no one advocating for you. If only there was something, some way to counter that.

That’s cold and harsh. But true.
