This place has become so toxic, I want out. And Id like to save a job for someone else and get severance if rumors of a layoff this month are true. But will there even be a chance to volunteer? If so, how? Is it just telling my boss? I don't want to if it won't happen, he is a grumpy mean type and don't want to sour the relationship even more if it isn't likely that they let me go.

Told my boss over a year ago. Never happened. It's a crapshoot.
I'm retiring next month. Glad/relieved to be getting out. Good luck to you all.
Let your boss know that you would like to be included in the next surplus. That is what I did, but it was 7 months before it happened.
Why don’t you folks just quit ? You are so poor you have to have a severance ?
Saving a job for someone else is a horrible thing to do. The very same toxic environment that you can’t stand is the one you are forcing some unfortunate employee to stay in after you leave.
Usually, if anyone hears that you want it, you will not get it.
You might try publicly telling everyone that if you were surplussed it would completely destroy you.
Good luck..
My friend who had enough asked their Manager to put them on the list after trying to convince him to stay. The Manager is a good guy and was able to accommodate the request in two months.
Get in line and wait your turn. Half of us are just waiting for the severance.
Told my boss last year but there haven't been a surplus since because management is fixated on making conditions so bad in the office they hope we quit or able to terminate.us via RTO non compliance
At my one on one I told my boss I am ready to retire. He replied I will get you on the layoff list and that helps me a lot and you can get severance plus state unemployment. Easy to do and if your boss is being pressured he'll be grateful
I don’t know why some are acting as if it’s taboo to volunteer. It’s actually encouraged, and as an AM that had to select between good people on a team for surplus in the past, I can tell you it is very much appreciated if and when someone raises their hand…and usually always accommodated.
Generally, the way to do it politically correct is to say something like, "I heard through the grapevine that there might be a layoff coming. If you have to choose some employees in your group I would not mind being on the list to leave with severance. There are some things going on in my personal life that I would that I would not mind attending to."
If he gives you a rash of sh!+ then respond with, "I was just trying to give you an opportunity to more easily manage through this action".
You are auto-volunteered if you are Caucasian and over 49 1/2.
Aren’t they on record saying that we have to get younger and reflect our communities?
What about the town halls they are erasing or refusing to publish?

Join a union with spelled out layoff process.
Most supervisors will find a way to make you the chosen one if that is what you want. Your problem in this environment is that there may be 6 of your colleagues already ahead of you on the wait list.
You can't volunteer that's not how it works, not unless they ask for volunteers.
If you want to leave with severance and stuff you just going to have to wait if you want to volunteer to be fired that's easy

if the rumors are true that it's happening on 3/20, it's too late to volunteer for this round
Remember, they are trying to be somewhat selective to exit the ringers. The last thing they want is to end up with a company full of ringers.
Troll post. If you really wanted to volunteer it would have already happened.
It won’t sour anything. Just go to your manager and say, “There’s rumors of layoffs that may impact our group in the near future. If that is the case, I’d be willing to leave the company and accept severance.”
That’s it.
" If you are a top performer, he may choose to not choose you."
Anyone that posts here, whether still employed or already laid off, is a top performer.
The only way I know is to tell your boss. Even then it is not guaranteed. If you are a top performer, he may choose to not choose you.
