@42d I stand corrected. I should have said, "across most of the industry". The FAANGs tend to reward engineering more than sales, with stock options.

@421 Definitely not the case at big big tech

@41t Across the industry, this is generally the case. If you want money, go where the money is.

Management often cannot distinguish between top notch and ordinary developers. But they can tell who is making their sales quotas.

@3hv No disrespect to sales but that is very disheartening to hear that sales make more than distinguished developers(top notch in my experience)

Former Sales at SAS (left ~3 years ago). In the olden days $400K was doable or better. Last couple years I was there was more $300-350

@nj cool for the 2% that get offers from FAANG.

I've worked at Google. The pay was more when factoring in RSU’s for sure.
SAS you all make it seem like you are paupers. Perspective people…

@ha

This is true, but only in certain areas. Google is offering ~$280-300 TC for L5 in NC. Regardless; if you get a FAANG offer you should take it.

@mh It depends on what options they have. For a new grads seeking their first job, a FAANG would be better than SAS. But SAS would be better than many startups.

Agreed, for many new grads, in this market any job is a good job.

"SAS as a place for new grads to get experience and put a large company on their resumes."
...no, you can't be serious?!

I mean the bit about "large conpany on their resume"...do you know just how few people have even heard of SAS now...outside of Cary, that is?

New grads getting experience however, is not quite such a ridiculous idea as it was say 18 months ago...what with the IT job market collapsing...

I retired as a Principal Developer at $200K. I was told the Distinguished Developers did not make much more.

I knew first-line managers who made less than some of their employees. I believe if you rose up to VP, you could get $400K -- but I'd bet many of those VPs worked for less.

Historically, SAS had the best benefits around. That's no longer true, but for decades it enabled us to hire good talent without paying top dollar.

We rarely hired the best talent -- from Stanford, Berkeley, or MIT. Those people demand top salaries -- with equity. They go to the FAANGs.

For many years, our product had no significant competition. So we didn't need the very best talent. We weren't required to innovate, but to simply maintain the existing revenue stream.

So we hired the best talent from local schools. Many of these people were excellent; they could have gone to the FAANGs. But with nice benefits, and a relatively low cost of living, it was easy to hire local graduates who wanted to stay in the area.

That was, and is, the business model. If you worked at SAS long enough, you could make enough to retire, so I'm grateful for that. But it was never a place to get rich.

Nowadays, SAS is actively reducing headcount, and is targeting those with higher salaries. Under these conditions, only a few VPs will reach $400K.

I'd still recommend SAS as a place for new grads to get experience and put a large company on their resumes. But anyone with experience, looking to advance their career, should choose a company that is growing, not shrinking.

Why do you ask?

Sr SDEs in FAANG make over $400K. Sr managers in many non-FAANG companies also make over that.

I'm curious if SAS folks can ever make that kind of comp and if so, at what level. It seems to me even Sr directors at SAS cannot make that, yes?

Lifetime salary can often exceed $400k at SAS. Oh, you mean per year?! LOL!

$400k at SAS?? Only a few execs and the handful of people who have some serious dirt on the place.

On Glassdoor, a few SAS VPs claim $400K. Sales and marketing folks report $300-400K. R&D tops out around $200-250K.
