Honestly, Dell is a good company that allow you to work till 60. In bay area, they layoff you when you turn 40

"Dell laptops are ultra reliable"

Lol this is a joke right? Dell computers are designed to fail. I've yet to have a dell laptop or desktop whether it was for work or personal use that made it to the end of the warranty period without at least one major component failure. All were unusable junk within a few weeks of the warranty expiring too. Meanwhile my noname desktop from 2001 is still chugging along on all original parts. I'd still be using that as my main system if security updates for windows xp were still available.

Dell stock is up 300% in 5 years and up 20% just this year. Nothing is going to happen, especially considering is ranked exceptional in 5 of 6 of the key investing factors.

Down to $115 and then to $94 ish. AI waterfall is drying up.

@ae the ELT are like peacemaker. For Dell it’s “We will get the stock price to $200, no matter how many people we have to lay off to get it”

@a5 i don’t know how anyone could down vote this. It’s absolutely spot on. Company has missed on several innovation cycles, never did a good job of settling in and aligning product lines or business units post acquisition. Now they have essentially cut allinnovation investment and moved towards bottom line and stock price as the only priorities.

Stock has been way up and employee morale is in the gutters. Leadership was very clear stock going up was their main goal and they would slash as many employees as it took. Good stock, bad place to work.

I'm on the outside looking in, so no internal knowledge. Here's what I see

Still a solid company and I have continue to own Dell stock.
However, flaws from last 5 years...

  1. Oversized on staff from the EMC acquisition (and other depts). Gotta make a million+ per headcount. The downsizing is both numerical and also moving from an engineering and design company to a fulfillment and sales company once again.
  2. Missed some technology cycles (key storage functionality late, client revenue hasn't picked up)
  3. contradictory sales strategies. For example, do you sell VXRAIL, VSAN, Nutanix, PowerFlex, Azure stack or Red Hat?
  4. Channel strategy not migrated deeply or fast enough after the acquisition. The majority of business is channel focused, channel led or channel fulfilled, I believe.
  5. Margin challenges due to focus on component branding (NVIDIA, Intel, AMD, etc.), not Dell brand. Compressed margins on storage because of sales skills focus vs deal closure. Dell laptops are ultra reliable but not necessarily 'cool'. I'm not sold on the recent rebranding.
  6. Conflicted or contradictory messaging from executive leadership team, key sales execs. Dell was always dynamic to move - fast - for cycle and technology changes, but some has been really odd. When your sales cycle is multiple quarters or years, this can impact client relationships.

Dell has #1 market share for storage - still larger market share than when EMC was acquired. Servers are going gangbusters and the products are rock solid reliable. The culture changes from focus on the employees to the quarterly bottom line was the big change - boasts of already being a remote workforce during covid then the switch to RTO wasn't well received.

Stock price is doing well.
I think JC has done a very good job - company has grown significantly in revenue and profitability. The swing has gone a little too much towards the bottom line and the employees are due some love
