Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Any chance RTO gets dropped once it serves its purpose?

Namely, driving out the target number of employees?

I'm giving up going into the office. I've been going damn near everyday for the last 2 quarters, and I've had a face-to-face conversation with maybe 1 or 2 people (and it wasn't even work related) It's not worth the extra time/effort/money for a company that treats you like garbage. They can fire me for all I care, I'll welcome the time off.

@cn
Removing tax breaks was never seriously threatened by any government. The theory was put out by the press as a "this might be why they're doing it" and the executives didn't correct them.

But no, RTO was a tool to force compliance. If you follow orders to do something objectively stupid, you're more likely to do whatever else they tell you. Executives are he-l bent on bending their companies to their will and squeezing as much cash out now before the looming recession.

Shut up and grind as a recent article put it.

@bj only problem is in the US Dell gets major tax breaks for the offices. These breaks are contingent on the buildings actually being used though.

@bj right??? All the millions the real estate is worth and the high costs of keeping it, would cover all the layoffs if not more and yet, they chose to get rid of people instead.

Yes, during Covid-29.

The ISG floor in EMEA is a nightmare, everyone up on top of each other, its very noisy... Gets to the stage where a lot put in the NC earbuds and are basically done with social interaction, collaboration etc...

I foresee office closures on the horizon. Why pay for all that real estate when A) it can be paid for by employees WFH and
B) This can go on the bottom line and show how well Dell is doing to Wall St.

AI doesn't complain about going into office and it can work 24/7 without a break.

Man, if only there was some quote from an owner like Michael Dell stating that remote work was "here to stay." Oh well - it sure is fun watching all these CEOs try to stuff that genie back into the bottle.

@a4 Sorry to burst your bubble but no. It is NOT the norm. At one point, you are right, it was the norm. I did it for most of my career but times have changed. Most people did go into office, but not so much these days. People aren't wanting 5 days/week IN office anymore because with the advancement of technology, everything we can do at an office we can do at home.

Basically every company went full remote due to Covid and even at that, most were hybrid pre-covid anyways - including Dell. I'd love to know how or why somoene in idk, tech support for example... needs to be in an office to talk on the phone; or someone in HR needs to be in office to answer emails and review resumes or whatever tf else they do. Or those who work in IT need to be in an office to remote into their equipment to do xyz when it can be done at home.

MOST jobs at Dell can absolutely be done at home. As with damn near any company, honestly.

When you go into the office, what are you doing? You are bringing in your company issued laptop. You go sit at a desk. You open the computer up. Plug it in and connect to the internet. Then you do whatever your job is. Right?

EVERYBODY has internet at home. In the case of Dell - and damn near any company these days - we use a VPN. Which can be accessed anywhere (almost) as long as you can connect to this wonderful thing called the internet!

Seems very leader dependent. My boss told us he doesn't care if we show up, but if someone from high up raises a stink we are aware of the policy and are doing so at our own risk.

@a4 No, it WAS the norm. It's definitely not the norm anymore and hasn't been for 5+ years. Even before covid Dell was always a 3 day in, 2 day at home.

All the people dell is laying off right now, they are going to have a hard time filling those spots because most people are looking for REMOTE or hybrid. NOT full time in office. Living in Austin, the Dell HQ (RR) isn't exactly convenient for the majority of people so, those who are valuable will look for jobs closer to them - which isn't going to be in Round Rock lol.

I sure af don't want a full time office job at this point, either. 5 days/week in office is a thing of the past and companies will figure that out... The days of being in office are over. Especially with those who have the experience and qualifications to get good jobs. Recent grads? Well, they gonna have to su-k it up and THOSE are the people who Dell will end up hiring, then firing in a month lmfao.

@a3 Depends on the orgs execs/VP's honestly... My manager doesn't gaf if we badge in or not and even our VP's are against it but, our VP's monitor it because of THEIR boss. My manager told us that he doesn't care until he's told to care, basically. After the reorg bs, my new manager/director basically said "all they care about is badge swipes" and "take that as you wish" wink wink.

Long story short, most orgs dgaf but are "monitoring" because of their boss.

RTO is and, mark my word... going away. At least the way it is now and the whole monitoring bs. I give it till January and it'll be gone.

Yes, 100%. I'd be curious how many people went on "medical" to get out of it lol... The amount of people who live 5-15 mins from an office who just badge in and go straight back home...

The amount of people who badge in, go take a dump, grab some food from the cafe, finish a meeting and be gone by 10:30am.

Every time I went in, the place was empty by 11am. So I said fk it, and just started badging in and going straight back home. What's the point in working in office when your ENTIRE team is spread across the country and/or world and you still attend meetings via zoom and/or TEAMS? I can do that at home in comfy clothes and in a better chair, with my 43" monitors.

Instead, I drive an hour to the office, park in a handicap spot, walk 20 yards to the door, just to swipe in to make execs happy, then drive straight back home and hey, if I have a meeting? I join in the car because you know... we have email and teams on our phones!!

The irony is that I don't MIND being in office but if nobody on my team is there? What tf is the point?

I’ve never taken RTO seriously. Didn’t badge in a single time during first half despite living 15 mins away. If you add enough value, they aren’t going to say jack. That said, my manager never believed in the policy. ISG PreSales.
