Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Work harder, faster

People are doing more work due to the layoffs and that means they're juggling more, working longer hours, and even weekends. It's to the point I am the one who is holding everybody up as I work on one task, do 40 hours maximum, and never work weekends as I have a life. Is this just me or are others in similar predicaments? I do wonder if they'll get rid of me for being the weakest link.

You won't be managed up, just managed down. And your 1x1's will never have career path discussed the numbers and forecast will dominate the conversation this is not just at dell but pretty much every sales IT environment

"Have you shown them actual demand capacity data to illustrate where the constraints are and where value is being lost by you being over-extended?"

Yup. The logic management uses is that if I have time to collect and present this data then I have time for more busy work.

Id--t managers are not new. I remember back in my early EMC days when we had a guest manager from Ireland. (I don’t know why they did those rotations).
He handed me two cases and said these are my top priorities treat them as equally important.
I told that wasn’t possible because going through the log files for each would take time. “Which is more important.” The reply was “Why can’t you work them both.”
I told him that, “unlike managers, I can’t tell people to do something. There is no delegation here. Just me”

He sent a nasty email to his boss about my poor customer service attitude. I was lucky a coworker suddenly had some time and helped me. The manager took credit and he was promoted less than a year later. A few months later he was recruited by another firm.

I guess successful managers don’t live in our reality.

"Every time I have gone to my manager with this the result has been an increase in pointless administrative tasks."

Have you shown them actual demand capacity data to illustrate where the constraints are and where value is being lost by you being over-extended?

"talk to your manager, show them the data regarding your capacity and have them prioritize the work for you. I guarantee you that 25-40% of what you think is important, they will remove from your plate"

Every time I have gone to my manager with this the result has been an increase in pointless administrative tasks.

Why do you all have such problems managing up. talk to your manager, show them the data regarding your capacity and have them prioritize the work for you. I guarantee you that 25-40% of what you think is important, they will remove from your plate as it isn't
