I’m hearing rumors about this and if true, then I guess they really don’t care about culture and performance. Whether Tony Spring and Macy’s likes it not, the world changed after Covid. There is literally no need to work in an office 5 days a week, maybe not all positions. I can see buyers doing it but planners and other positions, that don’t need that kind of in office exposure, it’s just pointless and their reasons are arbitrary. When they did this last summer with the 2 days a week, it really ruffled feathers. You can’t expect people who have made huge life changes to balance their lives and work, to just come back 5 days when we have all been accustomed to our new schedules and lifestyles for the past 5 years. It’s incredibly selfish. Are they going to compensate us with all the inflation and rising costs with MTA and congested pricing or are they going to continue to shell out 2% annual increases and lousy bonuses while the execs collect their 5-6 figure bonuses and salaries, unfazed. This company used to be all about work and life balance and creating a pleasant, stress free work environment and they are undoing all of it. If they implement a 5 day RTO work week again, I hope it backfires and ppl quit and then turn scramble to rehire. I just hope this is noise and there is no truth to it but where there is smoke, there’s fire.

To the clown who commented they think everyone needs to go back 5 days a week, no one gives a fu-k what you think. You must be some loser store employee trolling. We have learned in the last 5 years, remote work can still get the job done. If people want to go in then let them but it shouldn’t be forced. Forcing ppl back is not going to save the business and increase sales. Not sure why this is such a hard concept to grasp but troll on.
People that think we need to return to office 5 days a week have no life
I personally feel everyone needs to go back to their office five days a week and I don’t care what industry you work. Covid is a non-issue, it’s considered nothing more than the flu according to the CDC at this point so we all need to put on our big girl and big boy pants and go back to work and get out of your pajamas and your home or resign
It will be 3 days RTO instead of 2 but not 5 days.
Obviously I'm not a corp employee with an office job. Yes covid changed things and showed how efficient work could still be done. However, the signs have been there for a long time now, those who were lucky enough to not have to go into the office, all over the country that was slowly going back to normal. So if working from home was that important to you, I'd have been job hunting. Once the devil came back to the white house, it was obvious most of corporate america was going to bend the knee for him. And back to the office was a big one. I don't even follow politics and even I saw that one coming, though the signs were there even long before election day.
I feel bad for any corporate employee who doesn't have their own personal space. When I worked in the corporate environment (for 2 different retail companies) I had to have my own space. It was far too distracting for me to not have cube walls. This was pre-covid.
I cannot imagine having to find a place to work everyday and have it just be an open desk.
This is amazing!!! Now you will really know what’s going on at the store level. Instead of showing up for 5 min. and see who’s really doing there job. Instead of coming in to mingle, lunch and call it a day;)
Ugh don’t even think it. I’m a lot more productive at home and the 2 days a week is fine because it breaks up the week. Not to mention the added expenses that comes with it and the company isn’t great with annual incentives and bonuses like they used to be. I just pray we stick with the 2 days. I feel like if people want to go in more then it should be an option for those colleague.
Bring your own lunch?
if we small people have to work 5 days a week in a store to keep the company going why shouldnt you im sorry. while all of you in corporate make more money.
Primarily because corporate massively downsized our office space during Covid. We don't have desks anymore, we have 4' wide sections of table that we have to sign up for every day. I've spent multiple days working off of a random table because I got to the office and someone had stolen the desk I signed up for. We don't have a cafeteria anymore, so we have to waste time driving out to a restaurant to get food. There's not enough meeting space, so people end up taking video calls from their desk. It's like trying to get work done in an airport.
I have nothing but respect for y'all in the stores. I'm in a store multiple times per year and see what you all go through. It's my JOB to make your life easier and more productive.
If management wants me to be good at that job, they need to give me the tools to do it... not force me back to work in the worst, least productive office space I've ever been in.
I’m all for higher ups to RTO in stores especially.. let them see how stores really are when things aren’t all as they seem. When other colleagues from their district are having to do “workshops” for visits, or how their superiors talk to their staff when no one is around.
Keith is the Chief Information Officer. I am inclined to think he would be a little better informed than anyone else on this site.
As already mentioned in other comments, where are people getting this info from? Is it just speculation or is there an actual source where this originated from that’s actually true? Other people said Keith was asked this and he said there were no plans for it but who’s Keith?
Good riddance.
Not Tony in the comments like 👁️👄👁️
As mentioned previously, in the tech town hall hosted a few weeks ago, Keith mentioned that no RTO was in the works (according to his knowledge).
Who knows though- I guess anything can change within a few weeks. Though I do see this as being a challenge that would require a well thought out plan.
We will all find out the 13th!
Curious - where are people hearing this? Has anyone heard this from a source OTHER than this website?
Most corporate employees at Macy’s are considered hybrid, yet many work remotely five days a week. For the company to succeed, having employees come into the office at least two days a week would be beneficial for the business. It would encourage colleagues to shop at HSQ, grab coffee at Starbucks in the building, and contribute to the overall office environment.
I’ve seen many comments about what Macy’s is not doing, but it’s time for employees to recognize that the new CEO must take the necessary steps to turn the business around. Unfortunately, that may include having employees back in the office. As much as I dislike it I do understand it. I’m sure the company will give employees advance notice if the new CEO wants people in the office more.
@ @ae+1jkbhwc2n, correct. Last year they gave us about 3 months to adjust. Some people resigned which I’m guessing was a calculated plan from the get go when they said they were bringing us back 2 days a week. I’m sure this is something they are banking on again if this rumor has truth to it. What i don’t understand is that out of state employees, about a handful that I know of, did not have to come back. They still kept their jobs and are still working even after the execs specifically said people who live out of state need to figure it out or they would be NGF. So it’s really unfair and not consistent with their protocols.
If corporate does require RTO, does anyone know of the expected timeline? I believe last return from Covid they provided 3 months to adjust?
I will have to make arrangements with my children’s school, and need time to plan.
Ty

To the clown commenting, “if store employees have to work 5 days a week then why shouldn’t corporate employees have to do it” well gee genius let’s see. Maybe bc we don’t work in the stores. We do all our work on our computers all day long. That’s the difference. And as far as pay goes, you have no idea wtf you’re talking about. Our raises and bonuses are abysmal and year after year, they look for loopholes to pay us less while everything else is price increases, we’re not being paid enough to catch up so maybe don’t comment things you know nothing about and fix your messy stores.
Unfortunately they anticipate people may quit and that is a calculated plus for the "cost cutting" column. Any employer has a right to demand RTO unless you signed a contract with a different arrangement. The process should be done with enough adjustment time and strong logistics planning. Maybe space could be found in NJ (perhaps convert a closing store) since a lot of folks live there (Not everybody neccesarily needs to be in HSQ). The big plus for RTO is developing a "casual mentoring" environment which is where most of the teamwork and growth of the newbies happens. I worked for the company both ways and RTO is better for the company.

This question was asked at the tech town hall, and Keith said he wasn’t planning to change the current process - unless a mandate was pushed down from above. So I suppose anything is possible. They would have to find more office space in NYC as HSQ isn’t big enough for 5 days / week; however, there is always a chance of Long Island City.. Cincinnati has plenty of space with P2 and MCCS.
I agree it would force an initial wave of resignations, but I’m sure they believe most would su-k it up and make it work. There have been some bigger tech layoffs and federal employees taking buyouts to saturate the job market for people looking for remote jobs. Hopefully it’s simply rumors, but these rumors usually have some merit.
